Everglades
Die Everglades sind eine Feuchtsavanne mit gigantischen Ausmaßen, eine einmalige subtropische Wildnis. Wasser ist ihr Lebenselixier, u.A. von teils ergiebigen Regenfällen. Ein seichter aber gewaltiger Fluss vom Lake Okeechobee fließt sehr langsam durch die Everglades in den Golf von Mexiko. Fast ein Jahr braucht er für die 180 km. Denn das Gefälle ist minimal, die höchste Erhebung in den Everglades ist 2,5 m über dem Meeresspiegel. Eine außerordentlich große Vielfalt von Pflanzen und Tieren lebt in diesem Gebiet, das weit über den Everglades National Park hinausreicht. Von Wanderungen in sehr unterschiedlichen Bereichen der Everglades werden wir in den kommenden Tagen berichten.
The Everglades are a wet savannah of gigantic proportions, a unique subtropical wilderness. Water is its elixir of life, partly from heavy rainfall. A shallow but mighty river from Lake Okeechobee flows very slowly through the Everglades into the Gulf of Mexico. It takes almost a year to travel the 180 kilometres. This is because the gradient is minimal and the highest point in the Everglades is 2.5 metres above sea level. An extraordinarily wide variety of plants and animals live in this area, which extends far beyond the Everglades National Park. We will be reporting on hikes in very different areas of the Everglades in the coming days.
