Uruguay mit unserem Womo
Sechs Wochen waren wir insgesamt in Uruguay, drei im südamerikanischen Winter (August) und weitere drei im folgenden Herbst (Mitte April bis Anfang Mai). Außer einer Woche in der Hauptstadt Montevideo sind wir auf zwei Touren in fünf Wochen mit unserem Wohnmobil durch das Land gereist. Es waren die erste und die letzte Etappe einer neunmonatigen Rundreise durch das südliche Südamerika, mit Touren durch Argentinien und Chile dazwischen. 29 Blog-Beiträge (einschließlich diesem) haben wir aus Uruguay veröffentlicht, mit vielen Informationen und brillianten Fotos.
Uruguay with our camper van
A total of six weeks we spent in Uruguay, three in the South American winter (August) and another three in the following autumn (mid-April to early May). Apart from one week in the capital Montevideo, we travelled around the country in our motorhome on two tours in five weeks. These were the first and last legs of a nine-month round trip through southern South America, with tours of Argentina and Chile in between. We published 29 blog posts (including this one) from Uruguay, with lots of information and brilliant photos.

Der amtliche, vollständige Name des zweitkleinsten südamerikanischen Landes ist: Republica Oriental del Uruguay (Republik östlich des [Rio] Uruguay), abgekürzt ROU. In der Sprache der Guaraní bedeutet Uruguay: “Fluss der bunten, singenden Vögel”.
The official, full name of the second smallest South American country is: Republica Oriental del Uruguay (Republic East of the [Rio] Uruguay), abbreviated ROU. In the Guaraní language, Uruguay means „river of colourful, singing birds“.

Tour 1: Nach Übernahme unseres Wohnmobils im Hafen von Montevideo sind wir zunächst nach Osten am Rio de la Plata bis Punta del Este und weiter am Atlantik bis zur brasilianischen Grenze gereist. Herrliche Strände und Leuchttürme waren die wesentlichen Sehenswürdigkeiten. Auf der uruguayisch-brasilianischen Grenze in Chuy Haben wir die Richtung geändert und sind nach Nordwesten weiter gefahren. Dort ging es nach Treinta y Tres, zum Nationalpark Quebrada de los Cuervos und durch den Campo, wie die Pampa in Uruguay heißt. Am Stausee Salto Grande haben wir das Land in Richtung Argentinien verlassen.
Tour 1: After taking over our motorhome in the port of Montevideo, we first travelled east along the Rio de la Plata to Punta del Este and further along the Atlantic Ocean to the Brazilian border. Beautiful beaches and lighthouses were the main attractions. At the Uruguay-Brazil border in Chuy, we changed direction and continued northwest. There we went to Treinta y Tres, the Quebrada de los Cuervos National Park and through the Campo, as the pampas are called in Uruguay. At the Salto Grande reservoir, we left the country for Argentina.

Tour 2: Über die Staumauer des Salto Grande sind wir auch wieder eingereist und haben unsere Quasi-Umrundung Uruguays in Richtung Süden und Südosten fortgesetzt. Nostalgische, geologische, historische und kunstvolle Sehenswürdigkeiten waren die Höhepunkte dieser Etappe, die uns erneut bis nach Maldonado geführt hat.
Tour 2: Via the Salto Grande dam we also re-entered and continued our quasi-circumnavigation of Uruguay towards the south and south-east. Nostalgic, geological, historical and artistic sights were the highlights of this stage, which again took us all the way to Maldonado.

Anfang August (tiefster Winter in Südamerika) pfiff ein kalter Wind durch die Straßen in Montevideo. Auf der weiteren ersten Tour durch das Land wurden die Temperaturen langsam etwas angenehmer und es blieb weiterhin trocken. Auf der zweiten Tour im Frühherbst war es überwiegend noch recht sommerlich im Land und wir haben ein paar, teils heftige, auch lang anhaltende Regengüsse erlebt.
At the beginning of August (deepest winter in South America), a cold wind whistled through the streets of Montevideo. On the first tour through the country, the temperatures slowly became more pleasant and it remained dry. On the second tour in early autumn, it was mostly still quite summery in the country and we experienced a few, sometimes heavy, even long-lasting downpours.

Wir haben Uruguay als angenehmes und absolut sicheres Reiseland erlebt. In der Nacht vor der Abgabe zur Rückverschiffung haben wir das Wohnmobil in Montevideo auf der Straße vor unserem Hotel geparkt. Das war der einzige Anlass der gesamten Reise, die Lenkradkralle zu nutzen. Die Menschen in Uruguay sind uns freundlich, aufgeschlossen und entgegenkommend begegnet. Allerdings ist es schwierig, jemanden zu finden, der Englisch spricht, geschweige denn Deutsch. Unsere Spanisch-Kenntnisse sind lediglich ein paar Worte und Begriffe. Trotzdem war die notwendige Kommunikation kein Problem.
An vielen Stellen im ganzen Land ist die Landschaft vermüllt, ähnlich wie in Argentinien und Chile.
We experienced Uruguay as a pleasant and absolutely safe destination. The night before dropping off for the return shipment, we parked the camper in Montevideo on the street in front of our hotel. That was the only occasion of the whole trip to use the steering wheel claw. The people in Uruguay were friendly, open-minded and accommodating. However, it is difficult to find anyone who speaks English, let alone German. Our knowledge of Spanish is only a few words and terms. Nevertheless, the necessary communication was no problem.
In many places throughout the country, the landscape is littered, similar to Argentina and Chile.

Die Verkehrsinfrastruktur in Uruguay ist durchwachsen. Viele untergeordnete Straßen sind nicht ausgebaut, also Schotter- und Erdstraßen. Mit Schlaglöchern, auch gefährlichen, muss fast überall gerechnet werden. Auf den Schnellstraßen wird eine Maut erhoben. Dafür gibt es eine Vignette; nur an einzelnen Mautstationen kann noch bar bezahlt werden.
Die Höchstgeschwindigkeit in Ortschaften ist 45 km/h. Die wird aber oftmals nicht erreicht, denn viele uruguayischen Autofahrer fahren sehr bedächtig. Entschleunigung könnte das Motto des Landes sein.
The transport infrastructure in Uruguay is mixed. Many subordinate roads are not developed, i.e. gravel and earth roads. Potholes, even dangerous ones, must be expected almost everywhere. A toll is charged on the motorways. A vignette is issued for this; cash payment is only possible at few toll stations.
The maximum speed limit in built-up areas is 45 km/h. However, this is often not reached, because many Uruguayan drivers drive very slowly. Deceleration could be the country’s motto.

Diesel war recht teuer, aber billiger als zu Hause, wo gerade das Preisniveau für Kraftstoffe sehr hoch war. Der Kraftstoff war offenbar stets gut und hat unserem Motor keine Probleme bereitet.
Anders als in Argentinien und Chile gibt es in Uruguay offenbar eine Infrastruktur für Elektrofahrzeuge. Es gibt noch nicht viele, aber bei einigen Tankstellen haben wir Hinweisschilder auf öffentliche Ladesäulen gesehen.
Diesel was quite expensive, but cheaper than at home, where just the price level for fuel was very high. The fuel was apparently always good and did not cause any problems for our engine.
Unlike Argentina and Chile, Uruguay apparently has an infrastructure for electric vehicles. There are not many yet, but at some petrol stations we saw signs indicating public charging stations.

Mobiles Internet war in Uruguay preisgünstig. Die Netzabdeckung des Landes mit schnellem Internet ist sehr gut, in Stadt und Land. Beim Kauf einer SIM-Karte muss man sich mit einem gültigen Pass registrieren lassen
Mobile internet was cheap in Uruguay. The country’s network coverage with fast internet is very good, in towns and countryside. When buying a SIM card, one must register with a valid passport.

Unsere Art zu Reisen hat in Uruguay sehr gut funktioniert. Mit der englischsprachigen App I Overlander haben wir fast überall Stellplätze gefunden. Häufig waren das großartige Plätze in Parks oder in der offenen Natur . Auch Orte, an denen wir Frischwasser tanken konnten, haben wir mit der App gefunden, u. A. an Tankstellen.
Unsere 2,7 l Propangasflaschen haben wir gleich nach der Übernahme des Womo am Rand von Montevideo füllen lassen. Die Information dafür hatten wir von Seabridge. Auf der zweiten Tour brauchten wir kein Propan tanken, weil die Gasflasche noch aus Argentinien ausreichend gefüllt war.
Our way of travelling worked very well in Uruguay. With the English-language app I Overlander, we found pitches almost everywhere. Often these were great spots in parks or in the open countryside. We also found places to fill up with fresh water using the app, including petrol stations.
We had our 2.7 l propane cylinders filled at the edge of Montevideo right after we took over the camper. The information we got from Seabridge. On the second tour, we didn’t need to fill up with propane because the gas bottle was still full enough from Argentina.

Einzelne offizielle nichtkommerzielle Stellplätze für Wohnmobile haben wir in Uruguay gesehen, einen auch genutzt. Ein- oder zweimal haben wir ein Hinweisschild zu einer Ver-/Entsorgungseinrichtung wahrgenommen. Wir haben unser Klo als Trenntoilette genutzt, wie wir es in Rumänien praktiziert haben. Selbstverständlich gibt es kommerzielle Campingplätze, aber die haben wir nicht genutzt.
We saw a few official non-commercial sites for motorhomes in Uruguay and used one of them. Once or twice we noticed a sign indicating a supply/disposal facility. We used our toilet as a separation toilet, as we did in Romania. Of course there are commercial campsites, but we did not use them.

Viele uruguayische Orte haben einen „Camping municipal“ (Gemeinde-Campingplatz). Insbesondere an Wochenenden ist auf diesen Plätzen reger Betrieb, gern auch mit lauter Musik bis spät abends. Die wichtigste Ausstattung sind Grill- und Picknickplätze, teils auch Wasserhähne. Die Sanitäranlagen sind nur selten gut. Häufig sind solche Plätze einschließlich Wasser kostenlos.
Wohnmobile haben wir viel seltener gesehen, als in Europa. Zelten ist weit verbreitet.
Many Uruguayan towns have a „camping municipal“ (community campsite). Especially at weekends, these sites are very busy, often with loud music until late in the evening. The most important facilities are barbecue and picnic areas, sometimes also water taps. The sanitary facilities are rarely good. Often such sites are free of charge, including water.
We saw campers much less often than in Europe. Tenting is widespread.

Als Selbstversorger haben wir Lebensmittel meistens in Supermärkten gekauft. Die Supermarktkette Ta-Ta hatte ein ganz ordentliches Sortiment, das beste Sortiment haben wir in den El Dorado – Supermärkten gefunden. Grundsätzlich bekommt man fast alles, aber selten in einem Geschäft. Und das Angebot ist nicht so breit, wie wir es in Europa gewohnt sind. Die Auswahl an Obst und Gemüse ist in Uruguay bescheiden, die Qualität nicht immer gut.
As self-caterers, we mostly bought food in supermarkets. The Ta-Ta supermarket chain had quite a decent assortment, but we found the best assortment in the El Dorado supermarkets. Basically, you can get almost everything, but rarely in one shop. And the range is not as wide as we are used to in Europe. The selection of fruit and vegetables in Uruguay is modest, the quality not always good.

Auf unserer Reiseroute (siehe oben) sind wir zweimal nach Uruguay ein- und wieder ausgereist. Die Grenzabfertigungen auf dem Flughafen von Montevideo waren normal und völlig problemlos. An der Grenzstation zwischen Uruguay und Argentinien war insbesondere die argentinische Seite bürokratisch und rückständig.
On our itinerary (see above), we entered and left Uruguay twice. The border clearances at Montevideo airport were normal and completely problem-free. At the border station between Uruguay and Argentina, the Argentinian side in particular was bureaucratic and backward.

Auch von MapFox.de haben wir den „Super Atlas Argentina“ mit zusätzlichen Karten der Nachbarländer von Zagier & Urruty Publications beschaffen lassen. Die beiden Uruguay–Teilkarten darin sind sehr grob, aber für die Übersicht ausreichend. Für die Detailplanung hatten wir in unserem Garmin-Navi die Südamerika-Karten.
Der Reiseführer „Uruguay“ von Lars Borchert aus dem Reise Know How Verlag hat sich für uns auf dieser Reise bewährt. Mit diesem Paket waren wir gut unterwegs.
For an overview of the entire itinerary, we bought the road map „South America“ from International Travel Maps from MapFox.de before the trip. Also from MapFox.de we had the „Super Atlas Argentina“ with additional maps of the neighbouring countries obtained from Zagier & Urruty Publications. The two Uruguay sub-maps in it are very rough, but sufficient for an overview. For detailed planning, we had the South America maps in our Garmin navigator.
The (German) travel guide „Uruguay“ by Lars Borchert from the Reise Know How publishing house proved its worth for us on this trip. With this package we were well on our way.
