This is the entire blog of our Scotland tour Nach Schottland geht die nächste Reise mit unserem Wohnmobil. On to Scotland To Scotland is the next trip with our mobile home. In Münsterland we stopped at friends. On a well-equipped camper pitch in Burgsteinfurt, we loaded the onboard battery and took a bit too long on the Internet for work on the blog. For the 270 km to Rotterdam in the Netherlands we still have four hours available. At 9pm the ferry to Kingston upon Hull in central England is going to sail, we have to check in at 19:30 at the latest. Till past Apeldoorn we are progressing quickly, the navi is forecasting our arrival at 18:37. Then the rush hour strikes. The first traffic jam we can circumnavigate, forecast: 18:55 clock. The further jams we must suffer. The Netherlands is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. Does anyone have an idea, what that means in regard to rush hours? The forecast fluctuates between 19:09 and 19:20. There must be nothing further in between. Finally Rotterdam is only a few kilometers away, but the navi still shows 55 or 60 km. About 40 km we drive on highways through the port of Rotterdam to the Europoort, and the port goes much further. After all, we are there in time. But because of the hurry there are no new pictures from the Netherlands (see instead: ‚Mühlenerlebnisse in Holland‚ and ‚Begeisterung in Zeeland‚). The crossing to Hull was quiet, hardly any sea disturbance. And yet the vibration of the machine did not promote our sleep. We drive a few kilometers to the north, then in the direction to the north sea coast of England. We happen to discover a guidepost to the ‚Bempton Cliffs‘. We hope to be able to go for a walk there by the sea. Arriving at the cliffs, we have to make up for sleep. And then the surprise: here it is less about the cliffs and the sea than to bird watching. So we take the long tele lenses and walk to the very well developed lookout platforms. Beside kittiwakes and ice fulmars here is the only mainland colony of gannets. Usually the great sailing birds with the yellow heads breed only on remote, small islands, and we only see them on television.
By the way: The left hand driving works quite well. Very helpful is the elevated seating position in the Sprinter, additionally heightened by the all-wheel drive chassis. Mrs. Roundgetter lovingly made a sticker for the steering wheel with an arrow pointing to the left, but it did not stay there. Besides, I do not look at the steering wheel. I glued a wide transparent adhesive strip inside the windshield and painted an arrow to the left on it. Below it says „left!“ (German: “links”). If the British can decipher this, they may wonder to what connections the arrow points. Northwest of Scarborough in North Yorkshire, a fascinating, wide bog and heath area extends, protected as North York Moors National Park. Open heath areas alternate with forest, both of which are interspersed with marshes and moors. This is worth seeing in the rain and mist as well as in the sunshine.
Semi-wild sheep, apparently marked with paint by their owners, live in extensive areas, and birds are everywhere. No, our camper does not sink into the bog. We had a very nice pitch on a plateau in the middle of the heath of the Danby Moors, surrounded by marsh plants and thistles. Jahrhundert. Borderland We leave England behind us and Scotland receives us with an idyll. But this area, the ‚Scottish Borders‘, has long been bloody contested. Witness it is the ruin of Hermitage Castle from the 13th century. Jedburgh is a small place in the Scottish Borders, which is worth seeing for its 12th century houses. In many places there are small, low passages with sometimes strange street names. Because behind these passages there is no backyard, but a small residential street opens there.
The old post office mailbox with its ancient lock has probably been in the Wall since Queen Victoria ’s time. This is followed by the initials V R (presumably for Victoria Regina). At Greenlaw, within sight of the Scottish-English border lies the ruin of Hume Castle. From there you have a great panorama view in every cardinal direction. Before the visit, we had a tea break in the parking lot with the side door open. An elderly gentleman addressed us, in somewhat cumbersome German. As a youthful Sudeten German, he moved to Scotland after World War II, and now he lives here, widowed meanwhile. He used to look after the castle ruin for the tourists. Today he pays attention to the car signs, and when one looks German, he addresses the visitors and tells of his life, of Scotland and of Hume Castle. We have invited him to a tea and so we got to know, among others, it is not an inhabited castle, but a ‚keep‘, a fortress to secure the border. St Abbs on the southern north sea coast of Scotland is considered a particularly picturesque fishing village clung to rock cliffs. St. Abb’s Head is a rocky cliff that rises up into the sea and is populated by many seabirds. We were looking forward to it. And then bad weather in Scotland is no better than home or anywhere else. Not even a dog one would send you out into the rain. But in the sunshine as on the previous day we would probably not even reached the place because of plenty tourists. And it is really quaint. The weather is miserable not only in St. Abbs. But for the next day improvement is announced. So we used the rainy day to get further north. Edinburgh we passed and went over the Fourth Road Bridge and to Kinross to the Loch Leven. The free pitch there at the lake in a small forest under trees did not please us. In addition, there are warnings against thieves who ‚operate‘ there. But the city has a modern, large community center with administration, school, sports facilities etc. And with ample parking spaces under lanterns. There we were well cared for the night. The weather forecast was correct, the sun is out and we continue to Stirling. In the supermarket with excellent selection and almost French fish market the friendly cashier asks for our origin and welcomes us in German. Stirling Castle is not a ruin for a change (see also Hume Castle and Hermitage Castle). Character trees We are on the way from Stirling to Aberfoyle, it is already past 1 pm and Mrs. Roundgetter threatens with starvation. This is the clear indication that the Aroundgetter better really soon finds a nice place and has to park there, so she can cook something. The road is narrow or even narrower and there are hardly any places to give way at least to an oncoming truck. And then suddenly there is a broad driveway to the left to a farm, which is not visible from there. This is the salvation. The driveway is spacious, we do not hinder anyone and are not directly at the road. Now, Mrs. Roundgetter is getting in full cry in the mobile garlic kitchen and the Aroundgetter is sent to take pictures. As an admirer of large old trees (see also ‚About‚) he has already realized that we are in a mixture of park-like meadowland and arboretum. Where are still such trees to be seen? And then in such large numbers and in such variety. And in the whole region are acreage with such tree populations. Clumping around and photographing at the Grahamston property near Rednock Castle is not unnoticed. While we sit at the table, the lady of the house comes by, stops, and exhorts us not to leave any rubbish. We get into a short conversation and thank her for the wonderful photo-motives. We wanted to go to the Trossachs, a wild landscape at the southern edge of the Scottish Highlands. But the weather is against it. After photographing the great trees and until late into the night it has rained cats and dogs. In the morning the clouds are still hanging in the mountains near Calender at the eastern end of the Trossachs.
Before we go east, where the clouds rip open, we pass Loch Lubnaig on the eastern flank of the Trossachs. Here as well, high fog dominates the scenery. Between Gilmerton and Amulree, west-west of Perth, the valley Sma ‚Glen stretches in a north-south direction, which seems a little like from another world. Every now and then the sky rips open and a sunbeam falls on a distant hill. Water lily leaves in autumn mood It has been raining a lot this summer. Therefore the forest around Cally Loch near Dunkeld in the southeast of the Scottish Highlands is damp and swampy. Everything is mossy and fabulous unreal. The dead trees protrude gloomily between lush greenery. The water lily leaves shine in all autumn colors and the lake looks black on moorous ground. It is wonderfully quiet on our romantic hike through the secluded forest. Scottish traffic calming Today we go to Perth. My hiking boots are no longer waterproof and I would also like to go to the sunbed. The selection of hiking boots is huge and I find a pair, which not only fits perfectly, but also fits in color to my outfit. And then as a bargain! Also the sunbed salon leaves nothing to be desired, and so we enjoy a bit of the city traffic while window shopping. Road traffic is calmed sustainable by the presence of mounted police, which is a great pleasure for pedestrians and children in particular. That the infrastructure for mobile homes in the UK is not good, we have known. But it is even worse than we thought. Because of the good experiences with ‚France Passion‚ we bought the British counterpart ‚Brit Stops‘. This has already ’saved‘ us several times and led to a pitch. Of course the businesses that offer individual free-of-charge camper sites are less winemakers than in France. Many Brit Stops stations are pubs and inns. But there are also general tourist attractions (partly with fee) and farm shops. An especially fine farm shop is Peel Farm near Kirrimuir on the south-east edge of the highlands. The farmer is passionately dedicated to his agriculture. His wife, starting with a coffee shop, converted the original farm buildings into a large rummage store for fine treats, scottish woolen goods and souvenirs, as well as old furniture and exquisite decorations. Meanwile there are even holiday flats. Not only is this a lovingly run, worth seeing establishment (and the freshly baked pancakes were of the finest), the staff is very friendly and gives advice on hikes and trips to the area. The boss has researched exclusively for us, where and when Highland Games take place. We had a very good pitch there with perfect night rest. But before it was time, we made a hike into the area, from which Mrs. Roundgetter brought along some nice photos. In Kirkmichael fand dieses Jahr zum 134. mal Strathardle Highland Gathering and Agricultural Show statt. Strathardle is a Glen (valley) in the southeastern Highlands between Kirkmichael and Bridge of Cally, about 40 km north of Perth. In Kirkmichael, the Strathardle Highland Gathering and Agricultural Show took place this year for the 134th time. That is a very versatile event with presentation and awarding: These sometimes very whimsical competitions (for example piping with a certain choreography in front of two old, seated men in their kilts) are carried out with great seriousness. But the majority of the event is a great fun. And, of course, the parade of a ‚pipe band‘ is indispensable. A.: Die Highlights sind: Very important for the fun at a Highland Gathering are the so-called Highland Games, amongst others: The highlights are:
P.S. P.S. It took a badly rainy day and several evenings to select and edit the photos and videos for the two posts on the Strathardle Highland Gathering from over 500 photos and various video sequences. Summer forest in Glen Doll Today is a lovely sunny summer day at Glen Clova, a beautiful valley in the Scottish Highlands. We drive to the end of the valley to Glen Doll, from where we go on a hike along the stream through the forest. Everywhere lush ferns, thick moss, mushrooms and summer flowers, and the stream rushing through his rocky bed. At the rough north sea coast, south of Aberdeen, the onshore wind whips the sea in violent waves foaming against the rocks, illuminated by bright sunshine. But we do not have time to photograph this grand scenery. After the hike in the Glen Doll and a long drive we finally want a pitch for the night. The Harbour Bar in the small fishing village Gourdon offers three free places through ‚Brit Stops‚, there we want to go. After registering, we first look around the harbor. Very pretty, but it becomes uncomfortable when the sun disappears over the coast. And the wind whips the sea against the mole. Between port, golf and lighthouse Near Stonehaven at the North Sea coast, south of Aberdeen, we want to see Dunnottar Castle. The massive castle ruins on a clumpy rock, surrounded by the sea on three sides, looks huge in the tour guides. But now the fog is so thick that we would not even see it if we stood right in front of it, let alone at a reasonable distance to photograph it. So we go on straight to Aberdeen. The fog is only partially replaced by the increasing rain. We therefore have all the time to shop in a large supermarket. Then we drive to our day’s destination, a free pitch overlooking the harbour of Aberdeen. However, this is not, as supposed, in the busy streets of the city. The next morning, after the fog and the rain finally moved away, it becomes clear that we have been standing between the supply port for oil production in the North Sea, a golf course and the lighthouse Girdle Ness. There are also the remains of an old fortress next door. Highland cattle Today we photograph highland cattle! The Scottish Highlands are full of sheep. Sheep everywhere! But there are also cattle. Black, as in the Carmargue, white, brown and colorful, as everywhere. And sometimes one also encounters the shaggy, light brown and dark brown highland cattle with the impressive long horns. The cattle at Kincardine O’Neil in Deeside are very interested, pose for the photographers, demonstrate their agility and how to leisurely massage the belly with such long horns. Through the Grampian Highlands Red marked sheep in a meadow of yellow flowers. Landscapes like from another world. With bridges and buildings from other times. A castle like an unfinished row house (Corgarff Castle). And then a butterfly flutters by. Cromarty in high gloss It was not always so pretty and swept out in Cromarty, a small town on the northern tip of the Black Isle, north of Inverness. Unemployment was high and many people have migrated. But since the oil rigs have been anchored and repaired in the bay of Cromarty Firth, the area is experiencing a new upswing. Not everyone likes the sight of many oil rigs near the shore, but most of them have arranged with it. The place Cromarty makes in any case an appealing, tidy and extremely well-kept impression. In addition, there is a beautiful sky, which emphasizes this idyll. And the Black Isle is neither black nor an island, but a peninsula. Scotland tour
