Sehnsucht Nemunas

Yearning for Nemunas

Lithuania is a fairly flat country, the highest mountain is 293 m high. Perhaps this is a major reason why any hills that protrude a little from the landscape are very popular. As in Merkinė, a castle hill without a castle rises near Szeredzius. There are several hills along the Nemunas in particular, to which wooden stairs lead. From the top, the view is good and you can see the Nemunas meandering through the plain that it certainly created itself.

Road 141 runs along the northern bank of the Nemunas, but mostly at some distance. That is also why the castle hills are helpful to see the river. In a few places it is possible to drive down to the bank. There is a parking space there and it is not surprising that there is fishing. However, we are amazed by the constant coming and going in these places. Vehicles drive up until late at night, individuals, couples and families get out. Once we saw a picnic. But each of the people arriving here remains on the shore as if in awe and looks at the river, almost as if in a trance.
