Romantik, Faszination, Ergriffenheit: Sonnenuntergänge nehmen uns gefangen. Sie lassen uns innehalten, die warmen Rottöne ziehen uns magisch an. Die Landschaft wird in warmes Licht getaucht. Lange Schatten setzen Akzente. An vielen Orten der Erde konnten wir uns dieser Faszination nicht entziehen:
- In der zentralaustralischen Wüste, dem „Roten Zentrum“ Australiens sind wir passend zum Sonnenuntergang am Wahrzeichen des Landes, Uluru / Ayers Rock, angekommen.
- In Namibia haben wir auf der Gästefarm Kanaan an der Sundown Fahrt am Rand der Namib-Wüste teilgenommen. Nahe Keetmanshoop konnten wir den berühmten namibischen Köcherbaumwald (Quivertree Forest) im Licht des späten Nachmittags und Abend fotografieren.
- Legendär ist der Sonnenuntergang am Leuchtturm Akrotíri auf der griechischen Insel Santorini.
- In den isländischen Westfjorden konnten wir die Mittsommernacht mit Vollmond fotografieren.
- Ein paar Tage später haben wir bei einer Bootsfahrt in der Diskobucht in Grönland die Mitternachtssonne zwischen den gewaltigen Eisbergen des Eisfjords erlebt.
- Im Geysir-Gebiet in Island gab es an einem späten Juli-Abend eine spektakuläre Show von Abendrot, Wasser und Eruptionen.
- Einen besonders stimmungsvollen Sonnenuntergang über dem Meer hatten wir auf der griechischen Insel Lefkada.
- Kann es im finnischen Sommer romantischer werden, als an den Stromschnellen Koitelinkosski und am See Kovajärvi?
- Einige grandiose Sonnenuntergänge haben wir auf unseren Reisen durch Kanada erlebt:

- In Neufundland hat sich bei Bauline der Himmel tiefrot bis violett gefärbt, ähnlich ein paar Tage später bei Green Point im Gros Morne National Park.
- Bei den Lake Manitoba Narrows wurde eine anrührende Begegnung mit Stinktier-Babies von einem romatischen Sonnenuntergang gekrönt.
- Am North Saskatchewan River, gleich außerhalb der Nationalparks Jasper und Banff, ging die Sonne besonders romantisch über den Rocky Mountains unter.
- Den roten Leuchtturm La Martre am Sankt Lorenz Strom in der Provinz Québec hat der Sonnenuntergang noch attraktiver gemacht.
- Sonnenuntergang, außergewöhnlicher Leuchtturm und Aufgang des Vollmonds über dem Meer waren unser Abendprogramm an einem Stellplatz auf der Île-aux-foins in New Brunswick.
- An einer anderen Küste in New Brunswick, von Wasser umgeben im Lepreau Basin, konnten wir in einem besonders schönen Sonnenuntergang den extremen Tidenhub der Bay of Fundy beobachten.
- Ein Himmel in intensiven Rot-, Magenta- und Lilatönen über der St. Margarets Bay in Nova Scotia hat uns aus Kanada “verabschiedet”.

- An der spanischen Nordküste, in Galicien, hat die Sonne am Abend den wildromantischen Strand Playa de Basoñas spektakulär “ausgemalt”.
- Die größte schwedische Insel, Gotland, ist u.A. berühmt für ihre bizarr spektakulären Kalksteinformationen, die so genannten Raukar. Die besonders spektakulären Raukar Langhammars auf der Gotland vorgelagerten Insel Fårö haben wir bei Sonnenuntergang fotografiert.
- In Kroatien hatten wir am herrlichen Strand bei Rovanjska ein besonders intensives Abendrot. Ganz anders, aber nicht weniger schön war der Sonnenuntergang am Strand bei der Burgruine Večka Kula.
- In unserer Heimatstadt Hamburg haben wir im Frühling einen Sonnenuntergang mit gleichzeitigem Vollmond über dem Hafen beobachtet.
- Beim Leuchtturm Lõu, auf der Insel Saaremaa in Estland, konnten wir eineinhalb Stunden lang einen besonders schönen Sonnenuntergang über dem Meer verfolgen, der vom Vollmond abgelöst wurde. Ein paar Tage später hat der allerletzte Rest von Licht am Strand bei Peraküla begeistert.
- Stimmungsvolle Sonnenuntergänge haben wir in Rumänien erlebt:

- im Abstand weniger Tage bei Seimeni und Rasova an der Donau,
- bei Seaca in herbstlichem Ambiente an einem See.
- Bei Franceşti erschienen die Berge der Südkarpaten im Abendlicht wie die Dünen der Wüste Namib.

- Am Stausee bei Odeleite in Portugal gab es ein grandioses Abendrot. Einen außergewöhnlichen Sonnenuntergang haben wir am Strand Praia do Torrãoi do Lameiro erlebt, gefolgt von einem schönen am Praia do Furadouro.
- Wüste, Felsen und Meer waren die weiteren Zutaten zum Sonnenuntergang am Cabo Paquica an der Pazifikküste im Norden von Chile. Das Valle de la Luna (Mondtal) bei San Pedro de Atacama in Chiles Nordosten ist eine bizarre landschaftliche Sensation. Bei Sonnenuntergang ist die Klippe Piedra de Coyote (Kojotenstein) der großartige Aussichtspunkt über das Tal.
- Die salzhaltige Laguna Lobos in Argentinien hat uns mit bildschönen Wolken, Ibis-Schwärmen und Flamingos in Sonnenuntergang begeistert.
- Am uruguayischen Ufer des Stausees Salto Grande hatten wir am Abend vor der Weiterreise nach Argentinien einen traumhaften Sonnenuntergang. Am Punta Ballena, an der Atlantikküste Uruguays, ist der Sonnenuntergang ein Treffpunkt für viele Menschen.
- In den USA haben wir uns an den langen Schatten beim Sonnenuntergang in den weißen Dünen des White Sands National Park in New Mexico erfreut. Kaum zu übertreffen ist der Sonnenuntergang am wildromatischen Meyers Beach an der Pazifikküste in Oregon.

Romance, fascination, emotion: we are captivated by sunsets. They make us pause, the warm red tones magically draw us in. The landscape is bathed in warm light. Long shadows set accents. We have been unable to escape this fascination in many places around the world:
- In the central Australian desert, the ‘Red Centre’ of Australia, we arrived at the country’s landmark, Uluru / Ayers Rock, just in time for sunset.
- In Namibia, we took part in the sundown drive on the edge of the Namib Desert at the Kanaan guest farm. Near Keetmanshoop, we were able to photograph the famous Namibian Quivertree Forest in the late afternoon and evening light.
- The sunset at the Akrotíri lighthouse on the Greek island of Santorini is legendary.
- In the Westfjords of Iceland, we were able to photograph the midsummer night with a full moon.
- A few days later, we experienced the midnight sun between the huge icebergs of the ice fjord on a boat trip in Disko Bay in Greenland.
- In the geyser area in Iceland, there was a spectacular show of sunset, water and eruptions on a late July evening.
- We had a particularly atmospheric sunset over the sea on the Greek island of Lefkada.
- Can it get any more romantic in the Finnish summer than at the Koitelinkosski rapids and Lake Kovajärvi?
- We have experienced some magnificent sunsets on our travels through Canada:

- In Newfoundland, the sky near Bauline turned a deep red to purple colour, similarly a few days later at Green Point in Gros Morne National Park.
- At the Lake Manitoba Narrows, a touching encounter with baby skunks was crowned by a romantic sunset.
- At the North Saskatchewan River, just outside Jasper and Banff National Parks, the sun set over the Rocky Mountains in a particularly romantic way.
- The red La Martre lighthouse at the St Lawrence River in the province of Quebec was made even more attractive by the sunset.
- Sunset, an extraordinary lighthouse and the full moon rising over the sea were our evening programme at a pitch on the Île-aux-foins in New Brunswick.
- On another coast in New Brunswick, surrounded by water in the Lepreau Basin, we were able to observe the extreme tidal range of the Bay of Fundy in a particularly beautiful sunset.
- A sky in intense shades of red, magenta and purple over St Margaret’s Bay in Nova Scotia bid us farewell from Canada.

- On the north coast of Spain, in Galicia, the sun has spectacularly ‘coloured’ the wildly romantic Playa de Basoñas beach in the evening.
- Sweden’s largest island, Gotland, is famous for its bizarrely spectacular limestone formations, the so-called Raukar. We photographed the particularly spectacular Raukar Langhammars on the island of Fårö off the coast of Gotland at sunset.
- In Croatia, we had a particularly intense sunset at the marvellous beach near Rovanjska. The sunset on the beach at the castle ruins of Večka Kula was completely different, but no less beautiful.
- In our hometown of Hamburg, we watched a sunset with simultaneous full moon over the port in spring.
- At the Lõu lighthouse on the island of Saaremaa in Estonia, we were able to watch a particularly beautiful sunset over the sea for an hour and a half, which was replaced by a full moon. A few days later, the very last remnant of light on the beach near Peraküla was a delight.
- We experienced atmospheric sunsets in Romania:

- a few days apart at Seimeni and Rasova at the Danube,
- near Seaca in an autumnal setting by a lake.
- At Franceşti, the mountains of the Southern Carpathians in the evening light appeared like the dunes of the Namib Desert.

- There was a magnificent sunset at the reservoir near Odeleite in Portugal. We experienced an extraordinary sunset at Praia do Torrãoi do Lameiro beach, followed by a beautiful one at Praia do Furadouro.
- Desert, rocks and sea were the other ingredients for the sunset at Cabo Paquica on the Pacific coast in the north of Chile. The Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley) near San Pedro de Atacama in Chile’s north-east is a bizarre scenic sensation. At sunset, the Piedra de Coyote (coyote stone) cliff is a magnificent vantage point over the valley.
- The salty Laguna Lobos in Argentina thrilled us with its beautiful clouds, flocks of ibis and flamingos at sunset.
- On the Uruguayan shore of the Salto Grande reservoir, we had a fantastic sunset the evening before travelling on to Argentina. At Punta Ballena, on the Atlantic coast of Uruguay, the sunset is a meeting point for many people.
- In the USA, we enjoyed the long shadows at sunset in the white dunes of White Sands National Park in New Mexico. The sunset at the wild and romantic Meyers Beach on the Pacific coast in Oregon is hard to beat.
