Die Straße kocht! Nicht die ganze Straße. Aus einem Loch mitten in der Fahrbahn brodelt, spritzt und dampft Wasser. Die Stelle ist provisorisch markiert, einer der Pylonen aus Kunststoff ist unter der Hitze zusammengefallen.

The street is boiling! Not the whole street. From a hole in the middle of the road seethes, splashes and steams water. The spot is provisionally marked, one of the plastic pylons has collapsed under the heat.
Von Muriwai Beach sind wir über Auckland und nach Südosten über Hamilton ins Zentrum der Nordinsel zum Lake Rotorua gefahren. Der See ist die Caldera eines Vulkans. Diagonal von Südwest nach Nordost zieht sich durch die neuseeländische Nordinsel eine aktive vulkanische Zone. Darin liegen auch die Stadt Rotorua und ihre geothermal sehr aktive Umgebung.
Im Stadtteil Ohinemutu leben die Menschen unmittelbar mit der Geothermie. Das siedende Wasser, das zum Teil unter Druck austritt, wird zum Kochen und Waschen genutzt. Es stellt aber auch eine permanente Gefahr dar, denn es ist nur scheinbar beherrschbar.
From Muriwai Beach we drove via Auckland and to the southeast via Hamilton to the center of the North Island to Lake Rotorua. The lake is the caldera of a volcano. Diagonal from southwest to northeast, an active volcanic zone runs through the North Island of New Zealand. Within lies also the city of Rotorua and its geothermal very active surroundings.
In the Ohinemutu district, people live directly with geothermal energy. The boiling water, which emerges partly under pressure, is used for cooking and washing. But it also represents a permanent danger, because it is only seemingly manageable.
