Niemals wären wir in den kleinen Ort Thaxted geraten, wenn er nicht ein für Großbritannien außergewöhnliches Angebot hätte. Was wir auf unserer Frankreich-Rundfahrt im Frühling in fast jedem Ort erlebt haben, ist hier eine große Ausnahme: Gebührenfreie Wohnmobil-Stellplätze auf einem Parkplatz, sogar mitten im Ort. Unter anderem im ‚Brit Stops‘ – Verzeichnis ist dieser Parkplatz aufgeführt. Zwar liegt der Ort in der Einflugschneise des Flughafens Stansted, aber die davon ausgehende Lärmbelastung hielt sich in Grenzen.
Thaxted liegt rund 30 km südöstlich von Cambridge und nur 85 km westlich von Harwich, von wo wir mit der Fähre nach Hoek van Holland fahren wollen. Wir haben Zeit, uns den Ort anzusehen. Und werden angenehm überrascht: Von durchgängig gut erhaltenen, liebevoll gepflegten und herausgeputzten historischen Gebäuden sowie einem beschwingten Ambiente. Auf einem Flyer war zu lesen: „Thaxted is the Queen of Essex and the Parish Church is her crown”.
We would never have gotten into the small town of Thaxted if it did not have an exceptional offer in Britain. What we experienced in almost every place on our tour of France in the spring here is a big exception: Free camper pitches in a car park, even in the middle of town. Among other things, in the ‘Brit Stops‘ directory this car park is listed. Although the town is located in the approach lane of Stansted Airport, but the resulting noise exposure was limited.
Thaxted is located about 30 km southeast of Cambridge and only 85 km west of Harwich, from where we want to take the ferry to Hoek van Holland. We have time to see the place. And are pleasantly surprised: From consistently well-preserved, lovingly maintained and spruce historic buildings and a lively ambience. A flyer read: „Thaxted is the Queen of Essex and the Parish Church is her crown“.
