Endlich ist für die Transfăgărășan sonniges Wetter vorhergesagt. Also machen wir uns auf den Weg zurück nach Norden zum Pass. Mit 2.042 m ist er nicht ganz so hoch wie der Urdele-Pass auf der Transalpina, weiter westlich. Allerdings ist die Transfăgărășan länger und noch spektakulärer. Ein paar Kilometer vor Erreichen des Passes kommen wir an einem sehenswerten Wasserfall vorbei, der direkt neben der Straße von der Felswand stürzt. In der rauen Bergregion weidet eine große Schafherde.
Transfăgărășan with sun At last, sunny weather is forecast for the Transfăgărășan. So we make our way back north to the pass. At 2,042 m, it is not quite as high as the Urdele Pass on the Transalpina, further west. However, the Transfăgărășan is longer and even more spectacular. A few kilometres before reaching the pass, we pass a waterfall worth seeing, which falls from the rock face right next to the road. A large flock of sheep grazes in the rugged mountain region.

Der höchstgelegene und mit fast 900 m längste Tunnel in Rumänien ist zu durchqueren, er ist gewissermaßen die Passhöhe. Gleich nördlich vom Tunnel sind links und rechts der Straße Parkplätze und ein großer touristischer Rummelplatz voller Verkaufsbuden. Wie durch ein Spalier fahren wir die kurze Stichstraße durch das Buden- und Menschengewimmel zum Gletschersee Lacul Bâlea. Mit Glück ergattern wir dort einen Parkplatz.
The highest and, at almost 900 m, longest tunnel in Romania has to be crossed; in a way, it is the top of the pass. Just north of the tunnel, to the left and right of the road, are car parks and a large tourist fairground full of stalls. As if through a trellis, we drive the short branch road through the throng of stalls and people to the glacier lake Lacul Bâlea. We are lucky to find a parking space there.

Jenseits des Sees ist auf einer Anhöhe ein kleines Plateau mit einem gläsernen Pavillon. Von hier haben wir den maximalen Blick hinab über die besonders spektakulären Serpentinen der Nordseite der Transfăgărășan. Wie eine Spielzeugstraße erscheint sie hier. Sie ist nur vier Monate im Jahr ganz befahrbar (Juli bis Oktober); vom 1. November bis 30. Juni ist der Pass gesperrt.
Beyond the lake, on a hill, is a small plateau with a glass pavilion. From here we have the maximum view down over the particularly spectacular serpentines of the north side of the Transfăgărășan. It appears like a toy road here. It is only fully passable four months of the year (July to October); from 1 November to 30 June the pass is closed.
