Von Uspallata fahren wir auf der Ruta Nacional 7 weiter, in Richtung Chile. Die Straße folgt dem Rio Mendoza, der den Anden ein beeindruckendes, enges Tal abgerungen hat. Zusätzlich hat er noch im Talgrund einen nicht weniger beeindruckenden Canyon ausgespült. Die Berge zu beiden Seiten der Straße sind nicht nur imposant, sie sind auch besonders farbenprächtig. Alle Rot-, Braun-, Ocker- und Gelbtöne sind vertreten. Stellenweise kommt noch tiefes Schwarz hinzu. Die Ruta 7 verläuft ohne Serpentinen kontinuierlich bergan zum Paso Bermejo. Der eigentliche Pass in 3900 m Höhe ist allerdings schon seit vielen Jahren geschlossen. Die wohl recht abenteuerliche Piste erspart uns ein Tunnel durch den Berg, in 3200 m.
Over the Bermejo Pass
From Uspallata we continue on the Ruta Nacional 7 towards Chile. The road follows the Rio Mendoza, which has wrested an impressive, narrow valley from the Andes. In addition, it has carved out a no less impressive canyon at the bottom of the valley. The mountains on both sides of the road are not only imposing, they are also particularly colourful. All shades of red, brown, ochre and yellow are represented. In places, there is also deep black. Ruta 7 runs continuously uphill to Paso Bermejo without any serpentines. The actual pass at 3900 m has been closed for many years. The probably quite adventurous track spares us a tunnel through the mountain, at 3200 m.

Die Tunnelausfahrt ist in Chile. Die gemeinsame argentinisch-chilenische Grenzabfertigung für die Einreise nach Chile folgt ein paar Kilometer bergab (die für die Einreise nach Argentinien liegt 15 km östlich des Tunnels). Und dann geht es steil abwärts. Auf der chilenischen Ruta 60 müssen wir über zwei Blöcke von insgesamt 26 Serpentinen und sind froh, dass wir nicht im Stau hinter den LKW sind, die sich in Gegenrichtung zum Pass hinauf „quälen“.
The tunnel exit is in Chile. The joint Argentine-Chilean border clearance for entry into Chile follows a few kilometres downhill (the one for entry into Argentina is 15 km east of the tunnel). And then it’s a steep descent. On the Chilean Ruta 60, we have to cross two blocks of a total of 26 serpentines and are glad that we are not in a traffic jam behind the trucks „torturing“ their way up to the pass in the opposite direction.
