Auch am nächsten Tag hüllt sich der Snæfellsjökull in Wolken. Wir hegen die Hoffnung, dass wir durch die Wolkendecke hindurch gelangen können. Drei Jeep-Pisten führen zum Gletscher hinauf und treffen dort irgendwo zusammen. Aber die Piste von Süden her ist laut einem Schild an ihrem Beginn „impassable“ (unpassierbar). Wie der Fahrer des Fahrzeugs vor uns, halten wir inne. Die Straße ist nicht gesperrt, wie wir es beim Mýrdalsjökull und beim Eyafjallajökull gesehen haben. Zunächst aber locken ein Bergbach und die an sehr nassen Orten stehenden quietschgrünen Moose den Herumkommer an.
Something does work, after all
We hope to get up through the clouds, Snæfellsjökull is still wrapped in. The Jeep track from the south up the mountain, however, is declared impassable. It is not closed, unlike we have seen at Mýrdalsjökull and Eyafjallajökull. First a mountain stream and the yellowish green mosses, that grow on very wet places, catch the Aroundgetter’s attention.
Dann beobachten wir, dass ein Bus die unpassierbare Straße hinauf fährt. Was der kann, können wir auch! Also fahren wir auch hinauf. Und wie es hinauf geht! Da ist das volle Programm an Allradantrieb und Getriebeuntersetzung gefordert. Die Straße besteht aus Serpentinen, Steigungs- und gelegentlich Gefällestrecken, aber ihr Zustand ist nicht schlecht. Der Bus hält bei einem Kettenfahrzeug auf einem Schneefeld. Die Buspassagiere steigen in das Fahrzeug um und werden auf den Gletscher gefahren. An einem Schneebrett auf der Straße ist Endstation: Impassable. Aber die Landschaft, die wir hier oben sehen, lässt uns erahnen, warum der relativ kleine Snæfellsjökull, anders als der mächtige Vatnajökull, als mystisch gilt und die Fantasie anregt.

Then we observe a bus going up the impassable road. We follow along the winding and steep track. What he can do, we can do too! So we’re going up there too. And how it goes up! The full programme of four-wheel drive and gear reduction is required. The road consists of serpentines, uphill and occasionally downhill stretches, but its condition is not bad. The bus stops at a tracked vehicle on a snowfield. The bus passengers transfer to the vehicle and are driven onto the glacier. The end of the line is at a snow slab on the road: Impassable. But the landscape we see up here gives us an idea why the relatively small Snæfellsjökull, unlike the mighty Vatnajökull, is considered mystical and captures the imagination.
