Von Stewart fahren wir zwangsläufig zurück zum Highway BC 37 und auf ihm weiter nach Norden. Bei bestem Sommerwetter bestätigt sich das Motto der Provinz: Beautiful British Columbia. Der folgende Morgen bringt zunächst einen Wetterwechsel. Dramatische Wolkenformationen ziehen über den Himmel.
Wildfires From Stewart, we inevitably drive back to Highway BC 37 and continue north. In the best summer weather, the motto of the province is confirmed: Beautiful British Columbia. The following morning brings first a change of weather. Dramatic cloud formations move across the sky.
Mittags liegt der Geruch von Rauch in der Luft. Dann bemerken wir eine leicht bräunliche Tönung der dichten Wolken. Der Rauchgeruch wird immer stärker. An einer Straßenbaustelle südlich von Dease Lake müssen wir halten und auf den Gegenverkehr warten. Dabei erfahren wir von den Bauarbeitern, dass Telegraph Creek, etwa 50 km westlich, evakuiert wurde. Für Dease Lake wird Evakuierungsalarm erwogen. Dort müssen wir durch, oder zurück und ca. tausend Kilometer Umweg fahren.
At noon, the smell of smoke is in the air. Then we notice a light brownish tint of the dense clouds. At a road construction site south of Dease Lake we have to stop and wait for oncoming traffic. From the construction workers we learn that Telegraph Creek, about 50 km to the west, was evacuated. Evacuation alert is being considered for Dease Lake. There we have to drive through, or back and about a thousand kilometers detour.
Wir beschließen weiter zu fahren, denn die Straße ist nicht gesperrt. Der Rauch wird stärker, die Landschaft ist zunehmend wie in Nebel getaucht. In Dease Lake tanken wir vorsichtshalber nochmal voll, um unseren Bewegungsradius zu maximieren. Auf der Weiterfahrt wird der Rauch schwächer und wir sind erleichtert. Doch die Freude währt nicht lange, voraus in der Ferne, scheinbar im Bereich der Straße, stehen Rauchsäulen. Schließlich halten wir einen Camper an, der uns entgegen kommt, und fragen nach der Situation weiter voraus. Der Fahrer gibt Entwarnung, die Straße sei problemlos passierbar. Tatsächlich qualmt es stark ein paar hundert Meter von der Straße entfernt, aber wir sehen keine Flammen. Als wir den dichten Rauch endlich hinter uns gelassen haben, sind wir sehr froh, bleiben aber alarmiert.
We decide to continue driving because the road is not closed. The smoke is getting stronger, the landscape is increasingly bathed in fog. As a precaution, we refuel at Dease Lake to maximize our range of motion. On the way the smoke gets weaker and we are relieved. But the joy does not last long, ahead in the distance, apparently close to the road, are standing smoke columns. Finally, we stop a camper coming towards us and ask about the situation further on. The driver gives the all-clear that the road is easily passable. In fact, it smokes a few hundred meters from the road, but we do not see any flames. When we have finally left the thick smoke behind, we are very happy, but remain alarmed.
