This is the entire blog of the travel stops in Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park on our North America trip there in early spring, as well as a quirky stop in Montana. It includes the journey through the Yellowstone ecosystem (Grand Teton NP and Yellowstone NP) in Wyoming and Montana as well as a teddy bear fence in Montana, ten days in late May to early June (on two long pages): Der „Alte Vertraute“ meldet sich etwa alle 50 bis 127 Minuten. Das mittlere Intervall zwischen zwei Eruptionen des bekanntesten Geysirs der Welt ist 90 Minuten. Wegen seiner relativ gleichbleibenden Performance ist er so vertraut und hat den Namen Old Faithful bekommen. Im Visitor Center gleich daneben ist die voraussichtliche Uhrzeit der jeweils nächsten Eruption plakatiert, plus / minus 15 Minuten. Und dann dauert die Eruption 1½ bis 5 Minuten. Im Vergleich zu den meisten anderen Geysiren ist das sensationell lange. Für uns, die wir schon verschiedene Geysire in Island und in Chile gesehen haben, erscheint das, als ob es gar nicht aufhören will. Auch seine 30 bis 55 m Höhe und die 14.000 bis 32.000 l kochendes Wasser, die der Old Faithful bei jeder Eruption ausstößt, sind beeindruckend.
The „Old Familiar“ calls approximately every 50 to 127 minutes. The average interval between two eruptions of the world’s most famous geyser is 90 minutes. It is because of its relatively consistent performance that it is so familiar and has been given the name Old Faithful. The estimated time of the next eruption, plus/minus 15 minutes, is displayed in the visitor centre right next to it. And then the eruption lasts 1½ to 5 minutes. Compared to most other geysers, that’s a sensationally long time. For us, who have already seen various geysers in Iceland and in Chile, it seems as if it doesn’t want to stop. Its height of 30 to 55 metres and the 14,000 to 32,000 litres of boiling water that Old Faithful emits with each eruption are also impressive.

. . . . . . . . . . . Unweit des Old Faithful Geyser erhebt sich der Geysir-Hügel. Gemeinsam sind sie Teile des Upper Geyser Basin im Yellowstone National Park. Der gesamte Hügel ist eine große Ansammlung von heißen Quellen mit meist farbigen bzw. bunten Abflüssen und ganz unterschiedlichen Geysiren. Wieder mal haben wir dazu einen dramatischen Himmel. Aber die Dusche, die wir plötzlich bekommen, kommt nicht von oben sondern vom Beehive Geyser (Bienenkorb-Geysir). Der sprüht minutenlang eine riesige Fontäne, die der kräftige Wind über den Hügel treibt.
Not far from the Old Faithful Geyser rises the geyser hill. Together they are part of the Upper Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park. The entire hill is a large collection of hot springs with mostly coloured or multicoloured outflows and very different geysers. Once again we have a dramatic sky to go with it. But the shower we suddenly get doesn’t come from above but from the Beehive Geyser. It sprays a huge fountain for several minutes, driven over the hill by the strong wind.

Das flächenmäßig größte Geysirbecken im Yellowstone National Park ist das Lower Geyser Basin, etwa 11 mal so groß wie das Upper Geyser Basin. Die geothermalen Erscheinungen sind hier in weit auseinander liegenden Gruppen angeordnet.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Der Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone ist eine wirklich beeindruckende Schlucht. Das (vorwiegend) gelbe Gestein darin war namensgebend für den Yellowstone National Park.
The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is a truly impressive gorge. The (predominantly) yellow rock in it gave the Yellowstone National Park its name.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Der Yellowstone River hat den Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone geschaffen und arbeitet weiterhin an ihm. Zwei Wasserfälle sind daran beteiligt. Vom Artist Point haben wir eine schöne Sicht entlang des Canyon auf die Upper Falls, die wir auch aus der Nähe sehen können.
The Yellowstone River has created the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and continues to work on it. Two waterfalls are involved. From Artist Point we have a beautiful view along the canyon to the Upper Falls, which we can also see up close.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Zu den Lower Falls führt ein Wanderweg in Serpentinen hinab. Der Wasserfall stürzt besonders beeindruckend zwischen großen Schneebrettern in die Schlucht.
A winding hiking trail leads down to the Lower Falls. The waterfall plunges impressively into the gorge between large snow slabs.
. . . . . . . . . Rund ein Viertel der weltweit existierenden aktiven Geysire und ihre größte Konzentration sind im Oberen Geysir-Becken versammelt. Davon haben wir bisher schon die etwas abseits liegenden Bereiche Black Sand Basin und Biscuit Basin gesehen sowie den Old Faithful Geyser und den Geyser Hill. Jenseits des Geyser Hill dehnt sich das Upper Geyser Basin weiter aus. Der Konus des Castle Geyser ist tausende Jahre alt und steht auf einer noch älteren Basis. Zusammen bilden sie eine der größten Sinterformationen der Welt. Dieser Geysir eruptiert etwa alle 14 Stunden für etwa 20 Minuten! Bei unserem Besuch ist die nächste gegen Mitternacht vorhergesagt, zu spät für uns. Erhebliche Aktivität ist allemal in der Burg.
Around a quarter of the world’s active geysers and their largest concentration are found in the Upper Geyser Basin. Of these we have already seen the Black Sand Basin and Biscuit Basin areas, which are a little further away, as well as the Old Faithful Geyser and Geyser Hill. Beyond Geyser Hill, the Upper Geyser Basin continues to expand. The cone of Castle Geyser is thousands of years old and stands on an even older base. Together they form one of the largest sinter formations in the world. This geyser erupts about every 14 hours for about 20 minutes! During our visit, the next one is predicted for around midnight, too late for us. Still there is considerable activity in the castle.
. . . Weitere auffällige geothermale Erscheinungen sind hier die South Scalloped Spring, oberhalb des Firehole River, sowie die besonders heftigen Sawmill Geyser und Spasmodic Geyser.
Other striking geothermal phenomena here are the South Scalloped Spring, above the Firehole River, and the particularly violent Sawmill Geyser and Spasmodic Geyser.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Das Yellowstone Ökosystem umfasst außer dem Yellowstone National Park auch den Grand Teton National Park und das Land dazwischen. Hirsche sind in diesem Ökosystem zahlenmäßig am stärksten vertreten, überwiegend Wapitihirsche.
Deer country In addition to Yellowstone National Park, the Yellowstone ecosystem also includes Grand Teton National Park and the land in between. Deer are the most numerous species in this ecosystem, predominantly wapiti deer (american: elk).
. . . Maultierhirsche sind erstaunlich wenig scheu und überall anzutreffen. Die in dieser Region eher seltenen Weißwedelhirsche haben sich nicht gezeigt.
Mule deer are surprisingly not very shy and can be encountered everywhere. White-tailed deer, which are rather rare in this region, did not show themselves.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . Eine schöne, offene Landschaft ist das Hayden Valley im Osten des Yellowstone National Park. Der Yellowstone River fließt pittoresk hindurch. Ähnlich wie das größere Lamar Valley ist es ein ein Areal, wo Wildtiere zu beobachten sind, insbesondere Bisons.
The Hayden Valley in the east of Yellowstone National Park is a beautiful, open landscape. The Yellowstone River flows picturesquely through it. Similar to the larger Lamar Valley, it is an area where wildlife can be observed, especially bison.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Über 15.000 Liter kochendes Wasser pro Minute strömen vom Excelsior Geyser heftig dampfend in den Firehole River. Das Becken dieses Geysirs misst 60 × 90 Meter! Der dichte Dampf darüber gibt nur sporadisch die Sicht auf Teile der kochenden Wasseroberfläche frei.
More than 15,000 litres of boiling water per minute flow violently steaming from the Excelsior Geyser into the Firehole River. The basin of this geyser measures 60 × 90 metres! The dense vapour above it only occasionally reveals parts of the boiling water surface.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Ein Holzbohlen-Rundweg führt über bildschön strukturierte, geflutete Sinterterrassen durch das Mittlere Geysir-Becken, vorbei an der Grand Prismatic Spring zu Opal Pool und Turquoise Pool.
A wooden boardwalk leads over beautifully structured, flooded sinter terraces through the Midway Geyser Basin, past the Grand Prismatic Spring to the Opal Pool and Turquoise Pool.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Die größte Thermalquelle der USA und drittgrößte der Erde ist die Grand Prismatic Spring im Midway Geyser Basin des Yellowstone National Park. Sie ist eine der bedeutendsten Attraktionen im Park. Ihre Ausmaße sind 75 × 91 m und sie ist ungefähr 49 m tief. Durchschnittlich 2000 Liter 71°C heißes Wasser strömen pro Minute aus der Quelle. Mikroorganismen an den Randbereichen erzeugen die Farben zwischen rot und grün. Wegen der Wassertiefe und der hohen Wasserreinheit in der Quellenmitte ist die tiefblau.
The largest thermal spring in the USA and the third largest in the world is the Grand Prismatic Spring in the Midway Geyser Basin of Yellowstone National Park. It is one of the most important attractions in the park. Its dimensions are 75 × 91 metres and it is approximately 49 metres deep. An average of 2000 litres of 71°C hot water flows out of the spring every minute. Microorganisms on the edges produce colours ranging from red to green. Due to the depth of the water and the high water purity in the centre of the spring, its colour is deep blue.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Nach fast einer Woche verlassen wir den Yellowstone National Park in Richtung Norden. Auf dem Weg zum nordwestlichen Ausgang bekommen wir einen Tipp, dass etwa einen Kilometer weiter eine Bärin mit Kindern unweit der Straße ist. Tatsächlich grast dort eine Grizzly-Bärin mit drei jungen. Von den vielen Fotografen, die sich an der Straße, etwa 150 m entfernt, versammelt haben, lässt sich die Bärin nicht irritieren. Eine halbe Stunde lang können wir sie und ihren verspielten Nachwuchs beobachten.
Single mum, three children After almost a week, we leave Yellowstone National Park heading north. On the way to the north-west exit, we get a tip that there is a female bear with cubs about a kilometre further on, not far from the road. There is indeed a grizzly bear grazing with three cubs. The bear is unperturbed by the many photographers who have gathered along the road about 150 metres away. We can watch her and her playful cubs for half an hour.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Nein, von diesen Bären geht keine Gefahr aus. Wir können uns ihnen unbesorgt ohne Bear Spray nähern. Am Highway 89 zwischen Pendroy und Dupuyer in Montana ist ein Maschendrahtzaun großflächig mit Teddybären drapiert. Eine skurrile Dekoration, ein überraschender und witziger Anblick. Auch ein paar andere Tiere haben sich unter die Bären gemischt.
Bears show No, there is no danger from these bears. We can approach them without worrying about bear spray. At Highway 89 between Pendroy and Dupuyer in Montana, a wire mesh fence is draped with teddy bears. A bizarre decoration, a surprising and funny sight. A few other animals have also mingled with the bears.
