In Tetlin Junction beginnt (bzw. für uns endet) der Taylor Highway am Alaska Highway (Alaska Route 2) oder, wie er in den USA auch genannt wird, Alcan Highway (Alaska Canada Hwy). Dem folgen wir nach Westen bis Tok.
Tok ist im Wesentlichen eine Ansammlung von Geschäften und Tankstellen, die links und rechts entlang des Alaska Highway aufgereiht sind. Dafür hat es den Spitznamen „Mainstreet Alaska“ bekommen. Immerhin ist das Visitor Center gut sortiert mit vielen Broschüren und Karten der näheren und weiteren Umgebung. Von Kanada über die Grenze durften wir nur wenige frische Lebensmittel mitbringen, so nutzen wir die Gelegenheit, unsere Vorräte aufzufüllen. Und Tanken ist bei dem Spritdurst unseres Camper Van sowieso Pflicht.
Wir verlassen Tok auf dem Glenn Highway – Tok Cutoff (Alaska Route 1) in Richtung Südwesten. Bei Slana fahren wir nach Südosten auf die Nabesna Road. Sie ist eine von nur zwei Straßen, die in den Wrangell – St. Elias National Park führen. Nach etwa sieben Kilometern, an der Abzweigung zum Slana Settlement, steht eine sehenswerte Briefkasten-Batterie.
To Rock Lake
In Tetlin Junction begins (or for us ends) the Taylor Highway at the Alaska Highway (Alaska Route 2) or, as it is also called in the USA, Alcan Highway (Alaska Canada Hwy). We follow it west to Tok.
Tok is essentially a collection of shops and petrol stations that are lined up along the Alaska Highway. For this, it has got the nickname „Mainstreet Alaska“. After all, the Visitor Center is well sorted with many brochures and maps of the closer and wider surroundings. From Canada across the border, we were allowed to bring only a few fresh foods, so we take the opportunity to replenish our supplies. And fueling is due because of the gasoline thurst of our camper van anyway.
We leave Tok on the Glenn Highway – Tok Cutoff (Alaska Route 1) towards the southwest. Near Slana we drive south-east on the Nabesna Road. It is one of only two roads that lead into the Wrangell – St. Elias National Park. After about seven kilometers, at the junction to Slana Settlement, there is a noteworthy mailbox battery.
Danach wird aus der Asphalt- eine Schotterstraße. In den Informationen, die wir über diese Straße haben, sind mehrere einfache Campgrounds für Camper Vans angegeben. Es dauert einige Zeit, bis wir begriffen haben, dass es sich um Stellplätze für ein einziges Fahrzeug handelt. Einer ist für drei geeignet, aber zwei Plätze sind schon belegt. Also fahren wir weiter in die einsetzende Dämmerung, die von dunklen Regenwolken verstärkt wird. Und dann wird unsere Hartnäckigkeit belohnt: Am Rock Lake ist direkt neben der Straße ein einzelner freier Stellplatz mit traumhafter Aussicht.
Then the asphalt turns to a gravel road. In the information we have about this road, several simple campgrounds are mentioned for Camper Vans. It takes some time for us to realize that these are pitches for a single vehicle each. One is suitable for three, but two pitches are already occupied. So we continue into the dawning, which is intensified by dark rain clouds. And then our persistance is rewarded: at the Rock Lake, right next to the road is a single free pitch with a dreamlike view.
