Nach dem Ausblick auf den Fox Gletscher vom gegenüber liegenden Dschungel aus wollen wir näher heran an das Eis. Also fahren wir zurück zum State Highway und über den Fox River, dahinter die Fox Glacier Access Road hinauf. Die Straße ist gut ausgebaut und asphaltiert. Sie endet auf einem großen Parkplatz, der fast voll ist.
Das Ende der Gletscherzunge, zu der außer uns noch viele andere Menschen wollen, ist noch einige hundert Meter entfernt. Der Weg dorthin ist anstrengend: er ist steinig, unwegsam und führt bergauf. Die gelben Bagger, die in der Moräne arbeiten, machen sich darin aus, wie Miniaturspielzeug.
Über den umgebenden Bergen reißt gelegentlich die tief hängende Wolkendecke auf und gibt den Blick auf Bäche frei, die dort herab schießen. Ein Bach kreuzt unseren Weg. Seine vielen kleinen Kaskaden über Felsbrocken locken uns an.
to the tongue
After the view of the Fox Glacier from the opposite jungle we want to get closer to the ice. So we drive back to the State Highway and across the Fox River, behind it up the Fox Glacier Access Road. The road is well developed and paved. It ends in a large parking lot that is almost full.
The end of the glacier tongue, which is the destination of many other people besides us, is still a few hundred meters away. The way there is exhausting: it is rocky, wayless and leads uphill. The yellow dredgers working in the moraine look like miniature toys.
Over the surrounding mountains occasionally the low-hanging cloud cover tears open and gives the view of streams that shoot down there. A stream crosses our path. Its many small cascades over boulders attract us.
Die milchige Eintrübung des Wassers im Fox River ist ist typisch für Gletscherwasser. Dort wo das Geröll einige Jahre Ruhe hatte und nicht vom Gletscherfluss oder einem der Bäche frei gespült wurde, haben sich Minitaur-Landschaften mit Moosen und Flechten gebildet.
The milky cloudiness of the Fox River’s water is typical of glacier water. Where the debris has been resting for some years and has not been washed free by the glacial river or one of the streams, minitaur landscapes have formed with mosses and lichens.
Schließlich liegt voraus die Zunge, weiß, grün, blau und von Geröll grau und schwarz. Oben auf dem Eis ist eine Wandergruppe unterwegs.
Finally, the tongue lies ahead, white, green, blue and from scree gray and black. On the ice a hiking group is on the way.
