Kurz bevor wir den Paso Jama mit der chilenisch-argentinischen Grenze erreichen, passieren wir eine Herde Alpakas. Sie sind bekannt als „Woll-Lieferanten“. Ihre größeren und schlankeren, ebenfalls domestizierten Verwanten, die Lamas, haben wir schon ein paar mal gesehen (bei der Ruinenstadt Quilmes in Argentinien, nahe der Geysire von Puchuldiza und am Salar del Huasco). An den letzten beiden Orten haben wir auch Ihre kleinen wilden Verwandten, die Vicuñas, gesehen, außerdem bei den Lagunas Miscanti y Miñiques. Sie leben ausschließlich in sehr großen Höhen. Deren größere Verwandten,die Guanakos, sind in mittleren Höhenlagen der Anden und insbesondere in den Weiten Patagoniens fast überall anzutreffen, oft in großer Zahl.
Alpacas at the Jama Pass
Shortly before we reach the Paso Jama with the Chilean-Argentinean border, we pass a herd of alpacas. They are known as „wool suppliers“. We have already seen their larger and slimmer, also domesticated relatives, the llamas, a few times (at the ruined city of Quilmes in Argentina, near the geysers of Puchuldiza and at the Salar del Huasco). At the last two places we also saw their small wild relatives, the vicuñas, and near the Lagunas Miscanti y Miñiques. They live exclusively at very high altitudes. Their larger relatives, the guanacos, can be found almost everywhere at medium altitudes in the Andes and especially in the vastness of Patagonia, often in large numbers.

Dann sind es nur noch wenige Kilometer bis zur Grenzstation, an der wir mal wieder, diesmal besonders lange, von den diversen Beamten beider Seiten unnötig aufgehalten werden. Davor haben wir vom Mirador Paso Jama aus noch ein paar Aussichten über den Altiplano und den Salzsee auf argentinischer Seite.
