Die berühmteste Schlucht der Welt ist eins der größten Naturwunder der Erde. Der größte Teil ist vom Grand Canyon National Park umgeben, der zum Weltnaturerbe gehört. Etwa 450 km lang, 6 bis 30 km breit und bis zu 1,8 km tief ist diese Schlucht. Die Ränder des Grand Canyon liegen praktisch im Hochgebirge, der Südrand (South Rim) durchschnittlich auf 2.100 m über N.N. Noch 300 m höher liegt der Nordrand (North Rim) im Durchschnitt. Die Zufahrt dorthin ist wegen winterlicher Behinderungen noch bis Mitte Mai gesperrt.
Am Südrand haben wir hinreichend Möglichkeiten, diesen unfassbaren Canyon zu bewundern. Irgendwie sieht er immer wieder ähnlich aus und doch anders, aber immer grandios. Der Colorado River, der ihn in vielen Millionen Jahren aus dem Colorado Plateau gewaschen hat, ist von dort oben nur selten und in Abschnitten zu sehen.

The canyon is around 450 kilometres long, 6 to 30 kilometres wide and up to 1.8 kilometres deep. The edges of the Grand Canyon are practically in the high mountains, with the South Rim averaging 2,100 metres above sea level. The North Rim is on average 300 metres higher. Access there is still closed until mid-May due to winter obstructions.
On the South Rim, we have plenty of opportunities to admire this incredible canyon. Somehow it always looks similar and yet different, but always magnificent. The Colorado River, which has washed it out of the Colorado Plateau over many millions of years, can only rarely be seen from up there and only in sections.
