… in seinen diversen Erscheinungsformen ist jedes mal ein ganz besonderes Erlebnis. Auch wenn es kein Vulkanausbruch ist, die freigesetzte Energie, die Dynamik sowie die Geräusche und Gerüche können überwältigen. Gut, wenn nicht mit unmittelbarer Gefahr gerechnet werden muss. Island und Neuseeland sind beliebte Reiseländer mit aktivem Vulkanismus. Aber auch in Italien haben wir ihn erlebt und in Rumänien in einer besonderen Variante.
In Neuseeland sind die Stadt Rotorua auf der Nordinsel und ihre Umgebung eine aktive Region:
- In einem Stadtteil sind sprudelnd heißes Wasser und Dampfschwaden allgegenwärtig.
- In der Nachbarschaft von Wai o Tapu kocht ein Schlammbad.
- Das Geothermalgebiet Wai o Tapu ist eine vielfältige Hexenküche und ihr „Champagner-Becken“ eine der Top-Attraktionen.
Active volcanism …
… in its various manifestations is a very special experience every time. Even if it is not a volcanic eruption, the energy released, the dynamics and the sounds and smells can be overwhelming. It’s good when you don’t have to expect immediate danger. Iceland and New Zealand are popular travel destinations with active volcanism. But we have also experienced it in Italy and in a special variant in Romania.
In New Zealand, the city of Rotorua on the North Island and its surroundings are an active region:
- In one district of town, bubbling hot water and plumes of steam are ubiquitous.
- In the neighbourhood of Wai o Tapu, a mud pool is boiling.
- The Wai o Tapu geothermal area is a diverse witches‘ kitchen and its „champagne pool“ is one of the top attractions.

In der Toskana (Italien) kennen wir drei Orte mit aktivem Vulkanismus:
- Bei Monterotondo Marittima tritt heftig brodelndes Wasser an die Erdoberfläche und wird als Energiequelle genutzt.
- Auch das beschauliche Sasso Pisano nutzt die Geothermie; außerdem liegen dort am Berg dampfende Hänge mit Fumarolen.
- In der Terme di Saturnia wird heißes Quellwasser in terrassenförmigen Sinterbecken zum Baden genutzt.
In Tuscany (Italy) we know of three places with active volcanism:
- At Monterotondo Marittima, violently bubbling water rises to the earth’s surface and is used as an energy source.
- The tranquil Sasso Pisano also uses geothermal energy; there are also steaming slopes with fumaroles on the mountain.
- In the Terme di Saturnia, hot spring water is used for bathing in terraced sinter pools.

An besonderes vielen Stellen ist aktiver Vulkanismus in Island zu erleben:
- Auf der Halbinsel Reykjanes sind Seltún / Krýsuvík und Gunnuhver Geothermalgebiete.
- Ein anderes Bild bietet das Hveravellir im isländischen Hochland.
- Beim See Mývatn im Nordosten des Landes liegen um den Vulkan Krafla herum mehrere aktive Areale. Östlich des Mývatn steht das Geothermalkraftwerk Bjarnaflagsstöð mit einer eigenen Landschaft, die im Sommer interessant ist, im Winter imposant.
- Der stellenweise dampfende Berg Namafjall trennt das Kraftwerk vom Hochtemperaturgebiet Namaskarð / Hverir, hier auch im Schnee und im Sommer zu sehen.
- Nicht weit entfernt steht das größte Geothermie-Kraftwerk Islands: Das Kraftwerk Krafla wirkt im Sommer wie ein anderer Planet, eingeschneit fast gespenstisch.
- Zu den schönsten aktiven Gebieten zählt das Hochtemperaturgebiet Kerlingarfjöll im isländischen Hochland.
- Vermutlich die größte Attraktion Islands ist Geysir. Im Winter und wenige Tage später nochmal bei klirrendem Frost haben wir von dort berichtet sowie in einer Mittsommernacht.
Active volcanism can be experienced in a particularly large number of places in Iceland:
- On the Reykjanes peninsula, Seltún / Krýsuvík and Gunnuhver are geothermal areas.
- A different picture presents Hveravellir in the Icelandic highlands.
- Near Lake Mývatn in the north-east of the country, there are several active areas around the volcano Krafla. East of Mývatn is the Bjarnaflagsstöð geothermal power station with its own landscape, interesting in summer and impressive in winter.
- The mountain Namafjall, steaming in places, separates the power plant from the high-temperature area Namaskarð / Hverir, here also shown in snow and summer.
- Not far away is Iceland’s largest geothermal power plant: Krafla power plant looks like another planet in summer, almost ghostly when snowed in.
- One of the most beautiful active areas is the Kerlingarfjöll high-temperature area in the Icelandic highlands.
- Probably the biggest attraction in Iceland is Geysir. We reported from there in winter and again a few days later in freezing cold, as well as on a midsummer night.

In Rumänien gibt es so genannten kalten Vulkanismus: Die Schlammvulkane in der Großen Walachei / Muntenia, an zwei benachbarten Orten (die kleineren und die größeren) gehören zu den bekanntesten Attraktionen des Landes.
In Romania there is so-called cold volcanism: the mud volcanoes in Great Wallachia / Muntenia, in two neighbouring places (the smaller and the larger) are among the most famous attractions of the country.

In der Atacama-Wüste im Norden von Chile kennen wir zwei Geothermalgebiete:
- Zu den schönsten gehören die Geysire bei Puchuldiza.
- Das höchste Geysirfeld der Welt sind die „Geisers El Tatio“. Sie gelten als besonders attraktiv vor und bei Sonnenaufgang, aber auch danach ist das ausgedehnte Areal sehr sehenswert.
In the Atacama Desert in northern Chile, we know of two geothermal areas:
- The geysers at Puchuldiza are among the most beautiful.
- The highest geyser field in the world are the „Geisers El Tatio“. They are considered particularly attractive before and at sunrise, but the extensive area is also well worth seeing afterwards.
