Wasser-Airport
Es ist später Vormittag, als wir es endlich aus dem Bett schaffen. Und von Tatendrang kann heute keine Rede sein. Schließlich fahren wir nach Whitehorse und machen noch ein paar Besorgungen, unter Anderem deutsches Brot in guter Qualität aus der ‚Alpine Bakery‘.
Beim Tourist Office bekommen wir außer Infos und Karten von Whitehorse und Yukon auch die Bestätigung, dass Camper auf dem Parkplatz von Wal Mart kostenlos über Nach stehen dürfen. Tatsächlich ist ein Randbereich dieses Supermarkt-Parkplatzes für Camper ausgewiesen, aber niemand hält sich an diese Beschränkung. Auf dem gesamten Platz stehen viele Camper Vans und auch wir verbringen hier die Nacht.
Der Yukon River ist Namensgeber für Yukon. Aber er ist auch für den Namen der Stadt Whitehorse verantwortlich. Zur Zeit des großen Goldrausches hatte er südöstlich der Stadt gefürchtete Stromschnellen, deren Schaumkronen einem galoppierenden Schimmel ähnelten. An ihrer Stelle ist jetzt der aufgestaute Schwatka Lake, Hangar sowie Start- und Landebahn für Wasserflugzeuge. Viele Gebiete des Yukon sind über Straßen nicht erreichbar. Deshalb sind Wasserflugzeuge ein wichtiges Transportmittel.

It is later in the morning, when we finally get out of bed. And there is no zest of action today. Finally we go to Whitehorse and do some shoppings, among other things German bread in good quality from the ‚Alpine Bakery‘.
At the Tourist Office, besides infos and maps of Whitehorse and Yukon we get confirmation that campers are allowed free of charge in the parking lot of Wal Mart. In fact, an area at one edge of this supermarket car park is indicated for campers, but no one adheres to this restriction. There are lots of camper vans on the whole place and we also spend the night here.
The Yukon River is the eponym of Yukon. But it is also responsible for the name of the town of Whitehorse. At the time of the great gold rush, it had feared rapids south-east of the city, whose foam crowns resembled a galloping mould. In its place is now the held back Schwatka Lake, Hangar as well as runway for floatplanes. Many areas of the Yukon are not accessible via roads. This is why floatplanes are an important means of transport.
