Auf dem Weg zu den Nationalparks im Westen der USA sind wir ein gutes Stück voran gekommen. Louisiana haben wir hinter uns gelassen und Texas zu einem wesentlichen Teil durchquert.
Bei Del Rio ist unterhalb der Einmündungen des Pecos River und des Devils River der Rio Grande aufgestaut. Das Gemeinschaftsprojekt von USA und Mexiko dient der Trinkwasserversorgung und Stromerzeugung, aber auch für Freizeit und Erholung. Auf texanischer Seite bilden der Stausee und seine Umgebung die Amistad National Recreation Area (Nationales Erholungsgebiet, spanisch: Freundschaft). Bei unserem Besuch herrscht staubige Trockenheit, der Wasserstand ist auf ein historisches Tief gesunken (in 54 Jahren). So hat der See eine bizarre Karstlandschaft frei gelegt.
Friendship Park
On the way to the national parks in the west of the USA, we have made good progress. We have left Louisiana behind us and crossed a large part of Texas.
Near Del Rio, the Rio Grande is dammed up below the confluences of the Pecos River and the Devils River. The joint project of the USA and Mexico is used to supply drinking water and generate electricity, but also for leisure and recreation. On the Texan side, the reservoir and its surroundings form the Amistad National Recreation Area. During our visit, it is dusty dry and the water level has fallen to an all-time low (in 54 years). Thus the lake has exposed a bizarre karst landscape.
