Die River Road am Ufer des Mississippi zwischen New Orleans und Baton Rouge führt durch das Plantation Country. Die Besitzer der Plantation Homes wurden mit Baumwolle, Zucker und Indigo reich. Diese ließen sie mit Hilfe schwarzer Sklaven produzieren und auf Dampfschiffe verladen, die vor ihrem Haus anlegten. Ein paar der restaurierten Anwesen sind zu sehen. Mindestens so beeindruckend, wie die Paläste selbst, sind die Eichen, die sie umgeben. An einem Plantation Home ist ein Anleger für Kreuzfahrtschiffe. Im Abstand von jeweils ein paar dutzend Kilometern überquert jeweils eine gigantische Brücke den Mississippi. Den sieht man von der Straße aus nicht, denn er ist an beiden Ufern eingedeicht. Das Bild wird getrübt von sehr vielen sehr großen Industrieanlagen. Die Raffinerien, Chemie-, Kohleumschlag- und sonstigen -betriebe mit ihren Hafenanlagen nutzen die Schifffahrt auf dem Fluss.
The River Road on the banks of the Mississippi between New Orleans and Baton Rouge leads through Plantation Country. The owners of the plantation homes became rich with cotton, sugar and indigo. They had these produced with the help of black slaves and loaded onto steamships that docked in front of their homes. A few of the restored estates can be seen. At least as impressive as the palaces themselves are the oak trees that surround them. At one plantation home there is a jetty for cruise ships. A gigantic bridge crosses the Mississippi at intervals of a few dozen kilometres. You can’t see the river from the road because it is diked on both banks. The picture is spoilt by the many very large industrial plants. The refineries, chemical, coal handling and other plants with their harbour facilities make use of shipping on the river.
