Auf dem Weg nach Landmannalaugar lockt uns ein Wegweiser auf eine offenbar wenig befahrene Seitenstraße nach „Valagjá“. „Gjá“ ist isländisch für Schlucht, das wissen wir. Bis auf den Rand der Schlucht führt die Straße an zwei Stellen. Und als wir sie sehen, suchen wir im Wörterbuch, was der Name der Schlucht bedeutet. „Val“ ist u.A. „Auswurf“. Treffender als „Auswurfschlucht“ kann man diesen schwarz-violett-rot-gelben Höllenschlund nicht bezeichnen.
Hell’s abyss
On the way to Landmannalaugar a signpost entices us on an obviously little driven side road to “Valagjá“. “Gjá“ is Icelandic for gorge, we know. Up to the edge of the gorge the road leads at two places. And when we see it, we look in the dictionary what the name of the gorge means. “Val“ is “Ejection“, among others. More appropriately than “Ejection gorge“ one cannot call this black-violet-red-yellow hell’s abyss.
