Ein wenig anders ist es in Maramureş, dem Nordwesten Rumäniens. Hier fahren wir durch eine besonders schöne, hügelige Landschaft, in der sich eine eigenständige Kultur erhalten hat. Land- und Forstwirtschaft sind hier offenbar lukrativ: Nirgendwo im zweitärmsten Land der Europäischen Union haben wir so viele propere Dörfer und so wenig Armut gesehen. In dem waldreichen Gebiet hat sich eine große Handwerkskunst im Umgang mit dem Werkstoff Holz entwickelt. Die wird nach wie vor gepflegt. Viel mehr als in anderen Landesteilen sind Gebäude, fast ganze Dörfer, aus Holz gebaut. Dächer, die von Weitem wie reetgedeckt erscheinen, sind tatsächlich mit unzähligen, etwa handgroßen, geschnitzten Holzschindeln gedeckt. Offenkundiger Stolz von Hauseigentümern sind große Holztore, reich mit geschnitzten Ornamenten geschmückt.
It is a little different in Maramureş, the northwest of Romania. Here we drive through a particularly beautiful, hilly landscape in which an independent culture has been preserved. Agriculture and forestry are obviously lucrative here: nowhere in the second poorest country in the European Union have we seen so many proper villages and so little poverty. In the densely forested area, a great craftsmanship has developed in the use of wood as a material. This is still cultivated. Much more than in other parts of the country, buildings, almost entire villages, are made of wood. Roofs that appear thatched from afar are in fact covered with countless carved wooden shingles about the size of a hand. The obvious pride of homeowners are large wooden gates, richly decorated with carved ornaments.
