Siedelweber
Im Etosha Nationalpark gibt es nur eine Hand voll Übernachtungsmöglichkeiten und Restaurants. Das sind die fünf (bzw. inzwischen wohl sechs) Camps, die vom Staatsunternehmen Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) betrieben werden. In Namutoni war das Restaurant schon mit wenigen Gästen überfordert. Das sehr junge, wirklich entzückende Personal war offensichtlich noch in einem frühen Stadium der Ausbildung. Das Essen war allerdings gut. Im Camp Okaukuejo angekommen erfahren wir zufällig, dass es abends alternativ zu a la Carte ein Buffet gibt, für das man rechtzeitig reservieren muss. Das tun wir sofort und sind am Abend sehr positiv überrascht. Das wirklich sehr große, üppige und vielfältige Buffet ist sehr schmackhaft und gut organisiert.
Nach einer Übernachtung in Okaukuejo fahren wir weiter nach Westen. Vor Einbruch der Dunkelheit müssen wir das 180 km entfernte Dolomite Camp erreicht haben. Wir entfernen uns von der großen Salzpfanne und die Landschaft ändert sich, weniger Busch, mehr Savanne, auch mit Tierherden.
Sociable weavers
In the Etosha National Park there are only a handful of places to stay and restaurants. These are the five (or now probably six) camps operated by the state-owned Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR). In Namutoni, the restaurant was overstrained with a few guests. The very young, really lovesome staff was obviously still at an early stage of training. The food was good though. Arriving at the Camp Okaukuejo, we happen to find out that in the evening, as an alternative to a la carte, there is a buffet for which you have to reserve in good time. We do that immediately and are very pleasantly surprised in the evening. The really big, lush and varied buffet is very tasty and well organized.
After one overnight stay in Okaukuejo we continue west. Before dark, we must have reached the Dolomite Camp 180 km away. We move away from the large salt pan and the landscape changes, less bush, more savannah, with herds of animals too.
In großen, mehr oder weniger einzeln stehenden Bäumen haben Siedelwebervögel riesige „Wohnblocks“ gebaut. Diese Nistkolonien beeindrucken uns sehr. Ständig fliegen Vögel durch die nach unten gerichteten Öffnungen ihrer Nester ein und aus. In den offenen Flächen sind Oryx und Strauße unterwegs, Schakale suchen Schatten.
In large, more or less stand-alone trees, sociable weaver birds have built huge „blocks of flats“. These nest colonies impress us very much. Birds fly in and out through the down-facing openings of their nests. In the open areas Gemsboks and Ostriches are out and about, Jackals seek shade.
