Biber gelten als die Tiere, die seit Jahrtausenden die Landschaft Kanadas gestalten. Die Nationalparks führen sie deshalb als ihr Logo und sie zieren eine Münze. Immer wieder sehen wir ihre Bauten in Seen. Und oft sehen wir an den Straßen überflutete Bereiche, in denen ertränkte Baumstümpfe stehen. Auch das sind, jedenfalls in vielen Fällen, Spuren von Bibern. Sie finden offenkundig die Engstellen von Fließgewässern und bauen dort Dämme aus Bäumen, die sie fällen, und organischem Dichtungsmaterial. So stauen sie das Wasser auf, in dem sie dann einen Bau mit ausreichend Tiefgang bauen können. An der Straße nach Snow Lake im nördlichen Manitoba ist ein stattliches Exemplar zu sehen.
Beaver dam Beavers are considered the animals that have shaped the landscape of Canada for millennia. The National Parks therefore carry them as their logo and they adorn a coin. Again and again we see their lodges in lakes. And often we see flooded areas at the sides of the roads where drowned tree stumps are standing. These are, at least in many cases, traces of beavers. Obviously, they find the bottlenecks of creeks and build dams made of trees they fell and organic sealants. So they accumulate the water, in which they can then build a building with sufficient draft. On the road to Snow Lake in northern Manitoba, a large specimen can be seen.
