Von den blühenden Blumenfeldern im Westen der Niederlande machen wir einen Abstecher nach Osten. Die Veluwe bei Apeldoorn in der Provinz Gelderland ist das größte zusammenhängende Waldgebiet der Niederlande. In einem Land, das in weiten Teilen unter dem Meeresspiegel liegt, ist es mit bis zu 100 m über dem Meer eine nennenswerte Anhöhe.
Das Besondere hier ist der ‚Nationaal Park De Hoge Veluwe‘ (hohe Veluwe), eine herrliche Heidelandschaft. Wie es sich für die Niederlande gehört, ist der Park bestens durch Radwege erschlossen. Für Kraftfahrzeuge ist er gesperrt, an den Eingängen sind große Parkplätze angelegt. Wir parken am Haupteingang bei Otterlo. An den Eingängen und an einigen touristisch interessanten Orten im Park stehen insgesamt 1.700 weiße Fahrräder kostenlos zur Verfügung. Wir suchen uns jeder ein Rad aus, stellen mit wenigen Handgriffen die Höhe von Lenker und Sattel ein, und radeln los, durch Wald und Heide.
Unser Ziel ist das mitten im Park gelegene Kröller-Müller Museum. Dieses bedeutende Museum moderner Kunst hat u.A. die zweitgrößte Van-Gogh-Sammlung der Welt. Gemälde wie ‚Caféterrasse bei Nacht‘ kennt jeder. Aber im Original sind dies und andere Ölgemälde Van Goghs besonders beeindruckend.
Das Sahnehäubchen ist der Skulpturengarten des Museums, ein Abenteuerspielplatz moderner Kunst.
Great art in great nature
From the blooming flower fields in the west of the Netherlands, we make a detour to the east. The Veluwe near Apeldoorn in the province of Gelderland is the largest contiguous forest area in the Netherlands. In a country that is located in large parts below sea level, with up to 100 m above sea level, it is a significant hill.
What is special here is the ‘Nationaal Park De Hoge Veluwe’ (high Veluwe), a beautiful heath landscape. As befits the Netherlands, the park is well developed by bike paths. For motor vehicles it is locked, at the entrances large parking lots are built. We park at the main entrance near Otterlo. At the entrances and in some touristically interesting places in the park, a total of 1,700 white bicycles are available for free. We each choose a bike, adjust the height of handlebar and saddle with a few simple hand movements, and start cycling through woods and heathland.
Our destination is the Kröller-Müller Museum in the middle of the park. This important museum of modern art has amongst other things the second largest Van Gogh collection in the world. Everyone knows paintings like ‚Café Terrace at Night‘. But in the original, this and other oil paintings by Van Gogh are particularly impressive.
The icing on the cake is the museum’s sculpture garden, an adventure playground of modern art.
