Südwestlich von San Rafael, ungefähr in der Mitte der Provinz Mendoza, hat der Rio Atuel einen Canyon ausgewaschen. Von Nihuil bis südlich San Rafael hat der Fluss mehr als 500 m Gefälle, die zur Stromerzeugung genutzt werden. Dafür ist er in vier Stauseen aufgestaut. Den Anfang macht der riesige Embalse El Nihuil, mit Sandstränden und maritimer Infrastruktur. Über den See hinweg haben wir noch einmal einen Panoramablick auf einen schneebedeckten Andengipfel.
Into the Cañon del Atuel
Southwest of San Rafael, approximately in the middle of Mendoza province, the Rio Atuel has washed out a canyon. From Nihuil to the south of San Rafael, the river has a gradient of more than 500 m, which is used to generate electricity. It is dammed in four reservoirs for this purpose. The first is the huge Embalse El Nihuil, with sandy beaches and maritime infrastructure. Across the lake we have another panoramic view of a snow-covered Andean peak.

Gleich unterhalb der Staumauer erreichen wir den Canyon. Von einem Aussichtspunkt gegenüber Nihuil gibt es Einblicke in die imposante Schlucht. Von dort führt eine Schotterstraße ein paar Kilometer am Canyonrand entlang. Eine steile Erdstraße bringt uns in Serpentinen hinab auf den Grund des Canyons. Dort haben wir beim zweiten Stausee einen sehr ruhigen Übernachtungsplatz in einem Pappelwald.
Just below the dam wall we reach the canyon. From a vantage point opposite Nihuil there are views of the imposing ravine. From there, a gravel road runs along the edge of the canyon for a few kilometres. A steep earth road brings us down in serpentines to the bottom of the canyon. There, at the second reservoir, we have a very quiet place to spend the night in a poplar forest.
