Der traditionelle Käsemarkt in Alkmaar, der mindestens seit 1622 abgehalten wird, ist einzigartig. Von Anfang April bis Anfang September findet er jeden Freitag statt.
Auf dem Waagplein, dem Platz vor dem dem Wahrzeichen der Stadt, dem historischen Waage-Gebäude (De Waag), werden in langen Reihen Käselaibe gestapelt. Sobald der Markt eröffnet ist, tragen Käseträger mit großen Tragegestellen aus Holz mehrere dieser Laibe über den Platz. Sie sind Mitglieder der Käseträgergilde, deren verschiedene Gruppen an den unterschiedlichen Farben ihrer Hüte erkennbar sind. Die so präsentierten Käselaibe werden begutachtet und quasi versteigert. Die Laibe werden auf einen historischen Handkarren umgeladen. Der wird zum Abtransport des Käses zu einem LKW außerhalb des Platzes geschoben.
Heutzutage zieht der Käsemarkt unfassbar viele Touristen an und ist ein großes Spektakel. Die ganze Innenstadt ist voll von Menschen, der Marktplatz umlagert. Ein bis zwei Stunden nach Marktbeginn ist es uns endlich möglich, an die Absperrung zu gelangen und das farbenfrohe Treiben zu fotografieren. Viele der Besucher kaufen gern auf diesem besonderen Markt eine kleine Tasche mit zwei Stücken Käse. Ungefähr zehn atrraktive, junge Frauen in holländischer Tracht können nicht so schnell liefern wie die Kundschaft mit Zehn-Euro-Scheinen winkt.
Cheese market at Alkmaar
The traditional cheese market at Alkmaar, held since at least 1622, is unique. It takes place every Friday from the beginning of April to the beginning of September.
On the Waagplein, the square in front of the city’s landmark, the historic scale building (De Waag), cheese loaves are stacked in long rows. As soon as the market opens, cheese carriers with large wooden carrying frames carry several of these loaves across the square. They are members of the Cheese Carriers Guild, whose different groups can be recognised by the different colours of their hats. The cheese loaves presented in this way are examined and virtually auctioned off. The loaves are loaded onto a historic handcart. This is pushed to a lorry outside the square to transport the cheese away.
Nowadays, the cheese market attracts an incredible number of tourists and is a great spectacle. The whole city centre is full of people, the market place is surrounded. One to two hours after the market begins, we are finally able to get to the barrier and photograph the colourful hustle and bustle. Many of the visitors like to buy a small bag with two pieces of cheese at this special market. About ten attractive young women in traditional Dutch costumes cannot deliver as quickly as the customers wave ten-euro notes.
