Goldgräberstadt
Dem Dauerregen entkommen, ist unser Ziel St Bathans, ein kleiner Ort nordwestlich von Ranfurly in Central Otago, erreichbar nur über Schotterstraßen. Seit 1863 wurde hier Gold geschürft. Von den ehemals 13 Hotels ist noch das Vulcan Hotel aus dem Jahr 1882 erhalten. Damals lebten hier 2.000 Menschen, die überwiegend in den Goldminen arbeiteten. In der recht jungen Geschichte der weißen Siedler sind Ort und Hotel von historischer Bedeutung.
Heute leben hier dauerhaft kaum zehn Menschen. Sie kümmern sich offensichtlich um ein schönes Erscheinungsbild des Ortes. Lupinen in allen Farben schmücken die Vorgärten.
Gold-digger town
Escaped from the continual rain, our destination is St Bathans, a small town northwest of Ranfurly in Central Otago, accessible only on gravel roads. Since 1863 gold was mined here. Of the formerly 13 hotels, the Vulcan Hotel from 1882 is still preserved. At that time, 2,000 people lived here, most of whom worked in the gold mines. In the quite young history of the white settlers the place and the hotel are of historical importance.
Today hardly ten people live here permanently. They obviously take care of a nice appearance of the place. Lupines in all colors decorate the front gardens.
