Von Purmamarca aus wollten wir nach Westen, durch die Salinas Grandes und über den Jama-Pass nach Chile. Aber diese Route mit Pässen bis über 4800 m Höhe ist nicht vorstellbar bei Krims Zustand. Wir wollen daher in tiefer liegende Gebiete. Mehrere Tage fahren wir nach Süden, dabei kommen wir noch einmal durch die Quebrada de las Conchas. In der anderen Fahrtrichtung und zu anderer Tageszeit erscheint sie uns anders.

From Purmamarca we wanted to go west, through the Salinas Grandes and over the Jama Pass to Chile. But this route with passes up to over 4800 m is not imaginable with Krim’s condition. We therefore want to go to lower-lying areas. We drive south for several days, passing through the Quebrada de las Conchas once more. In the other direction and at a different time of day, it appears different.

Wieder auf der Ruta 40 durchqueren wir zwischen Santa María und Hualfin in der Provinz Catamarca den Campo Arenal o de los Pozuelos. Die bestens ausgebaute Straße führt hier auf eine sandige, fast wüstenartige Hochebene. Während wir noch rätseln, wovon wohl die ausgewilderten Esel hier leben, entdecken wir auch Ziegen, Schafe und sogar Rinder. Argentinische Nutztiere sind offenkundig genügsam.
Back on Ruta 40, we cross the Campo Arenal o de los Pozuelos between Santa María and Hualfin in the province of Catamarca. The well-maintained road here leads onto a sandy, almost desert-like plateau. While we are still puzzling over what the wild donkeys live on here, we also discover goats, sheep and even cattle. Argentine farm animals are obviously frugal.
