Volcanoes
We follow the active volcanic zone that runs through the North Island of New Zealand. In Taupo, northeast of Lake Taupo, we stayed overnight on a large camper site designated by the city, right at the lake. This is a volcanic crater, like further north Lake Rotorua, but much larger. And across from here is Mount Tongariro, the country’s most important volcano.
We continue along the eastern shore of Lake Taupo, via Turangi to Tongariro National Park. Mount Ngauruhoe, a secondary crater, shows with steam and smoke that an eruption is to be expected at any time.
On Mount Ruapehu, another major volcano of the massif, a road leads up to a winter sports area. This is now out of service in the New Zealand spring. But the landscape up here is bizarre.
