Das schottische Hochland ist wesentlich geprägt von ausgedehnten baumlosen Flächen, die von Torf bedeckt sind. Sobald wir einen Weg verlassen, stehen wir in Sumpf, Morast, einer Pfütze oder einem Rinnsal. Manchmal sind das einzige Element, das ein wenig Struktur in die „aufgeräumten“ Moorlandschaften bringt, alte zugewachsene Kanten von Torfabstichen.
Auf der Isle of Lewis and Harris ist all das besonders ausgeprägt: Es gibt praktisch keinen Wald, selten überhaupt einen Baum. Moor- und Torfflächen dehnen sich in einigen Gebieten der Insel kilometerweit aus. An vielen Stellen sind diese Flächen wie zerfleddert von alten Torfabstichen. Und viel öfter, als auf dem schottischen Mainland oder auf der Isle of Skye haben wir frische Torfabstiche gesehen.

The Scottish Highlands are characterized by extensive treeless areas covered in peat. As soon as we leave a path we find ourselves in marsh, morass, a puddle or a trickle. Sometimes the only element that brings a bit of structure into the „tidy“ moorland are old overgrown edges of peat stabs.
All this is especially pronounced on the Isle of Lewis and Harris: there is virtually no forest, rarely a tree at all. Moorland and peatland stretch for miles in some areas of the island. In many places, these areas are like tattered by old peat stabs. And much more often than on the Scottish Mainland or on the Isle of Skye, we have seen fresh peat stings.
