This is the entire blog of the last sections of our Canada trip through several of the eastern provinces in autumn. Schon in New Brunswick haben uns die herbstlichen Felder in Rot und Orange fasziniert. Auch auf Prince Edward Island haben wir sie schon ein paar Mal gesehen. Aber jedes Mal waren die Lichtverhältnisse so schlecht, dass kein sehenswertes Foto möglich war. Bei Hermanville, im Nordosten der Insel, passt es.
Fields in red and orange Already in New Brunswick the autumnal fields in red and orange fascinated us. We have also seen them on Prince Edward Island a few times. But each time the lighting conditions were so bad that no worth seeing photo was possible. At Hermanville, in the northeast of the island, it fits. Beim Leuchtturm East Point haben wir mit Blick über die aufgewühlte See unsere Mittagspause gemacht. Als wir zur Weiterfahrt starten wollen, erscheint ein Fuchs auf dem Parkplatz. Alles andere als scheu, konzentriert er sich zunächst auf das Fahrzeug neben uns. Selbst der bellende Hund darin stört ihn nicht. Vermutlich hat er gelernt, dass er hier von Touristen gefüttert wird. Als er nebenan nichts bekommt, wendet er sich uns zu. Aber das Einzige, das Wildtiere bei uns bekommen, sind Portraits.
At the East Point lighthouse we had our lunch break with a view over the troubled sea. When we are about to continue, a fox appears in the parking lot. Anything but shy, he first focuses on the vehicle next to us. Even the barking dog in it does not bother him. He probably learned that he is fed by tourists here. When he gets nothing next door, he turns to us. But the only thing wildlife gets from us are portraits. Die Touristeninformation von Souris ist nach Ende der Saison schon seit Wochen geschlossen, sodass der Parkplatz beim Leuchtturm mit Blick auf den Hafen verlassen ist. So konnten wir hier eine angenehm ruhige Nacht verbringen. Die war nach der Sturmnacht sehr willkommen. Auf der Weiterfahrt nach Südwesten machen wir einen Abstecher zu Sally’s Beach. Die Zufahrt ist jedoch verschlossen, auch hier ist die Saison lange beendet. Aber am nahe gelegenen Spry Point lädt uns der rote Strand zum Spaziergang ein.
The tourist information office of Souris is closed for the season for weeks already, thus the car park by the lighthouse overlooking the harbour is deserted. So we were able to spend a pleasant quiet night here. That was very welcome after the storm night. On the way southwest we make a detour to Sally’s Beach. The driveway is closed, the season is over here too. But at nearby Spry Point, the red beach invites us for a walk. Im kleinen Fischereihafen von Annandale, an der Ostküste von Prince Edward Island, entdecken wir eine kleine morbide Idylle.
In the small fishing port of Annandale, on the east coast of Prince Edward Island, we discover a small morbid idyll. Bei Port Borden ist Prince Edward Island seit ein paar Jahren über die Confederation Bridge mit dem Festland in New Brunswick verbunden. Die 13 km lange Brücke ist die alternative Verkehrsanbindung der Insel zur Fähre von Wood Islands nach Nova Scotia. Die architektonische Großartigkeit der Brücke wird besonders bei Dämmerung und Dunkelheit betont.
At Port Borden, Prince Edward Island has been connected to the mainland in New Brunswick via the Confederation Bridge for a few years. The 13 km long bridge is the island’s alternative access to the ferry from Wood Islands to Nova Scotia. The architectural magnificence of the bridge is emphasized especially at dusk and in the dark. Unsere sechsmonatige Kanada-Rundreise nähert sich ihrem Ende. In Halifax, der Hauptstadt von Nova Scotia, sind wir gestartet. Dort im Hafen werden wir in ein paar Tagen unser Wohnmobil zur Rück-Verschiffung nach Hamburg abgeben. Aber vorher wollen wir noch die Südküste von Nova Scotia bereisen. In West Pennant, an der Küste südlich von Halifax, haben wir direkt an der wenig befahrenen Straße einen kleinen, aber hübschen Platz gefunden. Ein Wildwasserbach mit moorig braunem Wasser mündet hier in die idyllische Bucht.
Our six-month tour of Canada is nearing its end. We started in Halifax, the capital of Nova Scotia. There in the harbour we will deliver our camper in a few days for return shipment to Hamburg. But first we want to travel the south coast of Nova Scotia. In West Pennant, at the coast south of Halifax, we found a small but pretty spot right by the little-used road. A white water stream with marshy brown water flows into the idyllic bay here. Cape Sable Island liegt im äußersten Südosten sowohl von Nova Scotia als auch von Kanada. Ganz im Westen der Insel erreichen wir bei ungemütlichem Herbstwetter den Fischereihafen West Head. Die farbenfrohe Szenerie im Hafen trotzt dem trüben Himmel.
Cape Sable Island is located in the extreme southeast of both Nova Scotia and Canada. In the west of the island we reach the fishing port West Head in uncomfortable autumn weather. The colourful scenery in the port defies the gloomy sky. Jeder kennt Liverpool, die Stadt der Beatles im Osten Englands. Aber in Kanada gibt es praktisch jeden britischen Ortsnamen nochmal, und jeden Namen einer britischen Region, z.B. London, Windsor, Sussex. Und Liverpool liegt ausgerechnet in Neu Schottland (lateinisch: Nova Scotia), an der Südküste. Sogar einen Mersey River haben sie hier (statt River Mersey). An dessen Mündung in den Atlantik liegt die größte Touristenattraktion der Stadt, Fort Point. Wo früher Kanonen den Ort schützten, wurde 1855 ein Leuchtturm errichtet. Der Parkplatz bei dem ungewöhnlichen Gebäude ist uns ein angenehmer Übernachtungsplatz.
Everyone knows Liverpool, the city of the Beatles in eastern England. But in Canada, there is virtually every British place name, and every name of a British region, e.g. London, Windsor, Sussex. And Liverpool is of all things in New Scotland (Latin: Nova Scotia), on the south coast. They even have a Mersey River here (instead of River Mersey). At its mouth into the Atlantic Ocean is the city’s top tourist attraction, Fort Point. Where once cannons protected the town, a lighthouse was built in 1855. The parking lot at the unusual building is a pleasant pitch for us. Die älteste deutsche Siedlung Kanadas ist Lunenburg. Die Hafenstadt ist berühmt für ihren Schiffbau. UNESCO-Welterbe ist der Stadtkern wegen seiner markanten, bunten Holzarchitektur und alten Kapitänsvillen. Wir grüßen mit diesen Bildern unsere lieben Verwandten im namensgebenden Lüneburg in Norddeutschland.
The oldest German settlement in Canada is Lunenburg. The port city is famous for its shipbuilding. UNESCO World Heritage is the city center because of its striking, colourful wooden architecture and old Captain’s villas. We greet with these pictures our dear relatives in the eponymous Lüneburg in northern Germany. An der Felsküste der Halbinsel östlich von Lunenburg liegt malerisch das Fischerdorf Blue Rocks. Einen Leuchtturm gibt es hier nicht, aber jemand hat sich ein Haus mit einem Leuchtturm-artigen Anbau errichten lassen. Am Ende der Straße erkennen wir, woher der Name des Ortes kommt: Blauschwarzer Schiefer.
On the rocky coast of the peninsula east of Lunenburg lies picturesque the fishing village of Blue Rocks. There is no lighthouse here, but someone has built a house with a lighthouse-like extension. At the end of the road we can see where the name of the place comes from: blue-black slate. Auf dem Weg nach Peggy’s Cove fahren wir durch eine bizarre Landschaft aus Felsen und Wasser. Am Canal Lake können wir das Wohnmobil parken, um zu fotografieren. Im Wasser an der anderen Straßenseite ist zu erkennen, dass dort eine Meeresbucht endet.
On the way to Peggy’s Cove we drive through a bizarre landscape of rocks and water. At the Canal Lake we can park the camper to take pictures. In the water on the other side of the road can be seen that there ends a bay. Peggy’s Cove ist berühmt für seinen Leuchtturm Peggy’s Point. Aber das Fischerdorf selbst ist auch sehenswert. Mit seinen bunten Häusern auf den meist kahlen Felsen erinnert es uns an Grönland.
Peggy’s Cove is famous for its Peggy’s Point lighthouse. But the fishing village itself is also worth seeing. With its colourful houses on the mostly bare rocks, it reminds us of Greenland. Der Leuchtturm Peggy’s Point in Peggy’s Cove gilt als der meist fotografierte Kanadas. Der Turm selbst ist nichts Besonderes, seine Umgebung macht ihn spektakulär. Er steht nämlich am Rand eines ausgedehnten Areals von glatt geschliffenen und blank gespülten Felsen. Bei Trockenheit ist das ein riesiger „Spielplatz“, auch für Erwachsene.
The lighthouse Peggy’s Point at Peggy’s Cove is considered the most photographed in Canada. The tower itself is nothing special, its surroundings make it spectacular. It stands on the edge of an extensive area of smoothly polished and bare washed rocks. In drought, this is a huge „playground“, for adults, too. Felsküste und offener Atlantik sorgen an Peggy’s Cove fortwährend für spektakuläre Wasserspiele. Energiegeladen branden die Wellen gegen die Felsen und erzeugen heftige Gischt. Bei herrlichem Wetter können wir uns kaum von diesem Spektakel lösen.
Atlantic rocks Rocky coastline and open Atlantic Ocean at Peggy’s Cove provide constantly for spectacular water features. Energetically, the waves surge against the rocks and produce violent spray. In glorious weather we can hardly part with this spectacle. Bei Black Point an der St. Margarets Bay finden wir auf einer Lichtung direkt am Wasser einen schönen Übernachtungsplatz. Im Abendrot wird er einer der schönsten der ganzen Reise.
Near Black Point at St. Margaret’s Bay we find a nice pitch on a clearing right by the water. In the sunset it is one of the most beautiful of the whole journey. Canada’s east in autumn
