Fünfeinhalb Wochen waren wir mit unserem Wohnmobil in Irland einschließlich Nordirland, die zweite Augusthälfte bis zum offiziellen Ende des Sommers. Vorher haben wir uns fast zwei Wochen für die Anreise gegönnt, die Hälfte davon in Süd-England. 64 Blog-Beiträge aus Irland haben wir veröffentlicht (einschließlich diesem), mit Informationen und vielen wunderschönen Fotos.

To Ireland in a camper van

We spent five and a half weeks with our motorhome in Ireland including Northern Ireland, the second half of August until the official end of summer. Before that, we allowed ourselves almost two weeks to get there, half of it in southern England. 64 blog posts from Ireland we have published (including this one), with information and many beautiful photos.

Auf unserer Route rund um Irland, mit Abstechern ins Hinterland, haben wir viel vom Land gesehen und erlebt: Von der Mitte am Shannon zu den Cliffs of Moher an der Westküste und zur baumlosen Karstlandschaft des Burren. Weiter sind wir dem Wild Atlantic Way nach Norden gefolgt, durch Connemara, Irlands wilden Westen, durch die spektakuläre Küstenlandschaft des County Mayo und den einsamen Nordwesten im County Donagal. Von dort ging es per Fähre nach Nordirland, wo wir uns an der Causeway Coast orientiert haben. Weiter führte die Route durch Irlands historischen Osten, östlich von Belfast und nach Süden bis in die Gegend um die irische Hauptstadt Dublin.

On our route around Ireland, with detours into the hinterland, we saw and experienced much of the country: from the middle at the Shannon to the Cliffs of Moher on the west coast and to the treeless karst landscape of the Burren. Further north we followed the Wild Atlantic Way through Connemara, Ireland’s wild west, through the spectacular coastal landscape of County Mayo and the lonely northwest in County Donagal. From there we took a ferry to Northern Ireland, where we oriented along the Causeway Coast. The route continued through Ireland’s historic east, east of Belfast and south to the area around the Irish capital Dublin.

Durch die Wicklow Mountains sind wir in Richtung Südwesten nach Kilkenny und Rock of Cashel gereist und nochmal zur Atlantikküste im Westen. Von den sensationellen Kilkee Cliffs aus haben wir uns wieder am Wild Atlantic Way orientiert, jetzt nach Süden. Die großen Halbinseln im Südwesten haben wir erkundet, mit dem Ring of Kerry, dann County Cork im Süden und schließlich Irlands Sonnenküste von Cork bis Wexford.

We travelled southwest through the Wicklow Mountains to Kilkenny and Rock of Cashel and again to the Atlantic coast in the west. Starting at the sensational Kilkee Cliffs, we rejoined the Wild Atlantic Way, now heading south. We explored the big peninsulas in the southwest, with the Ring of Kerry, then County Cork in the south and finally Ireland’s sunshine coast from Cork to Wexford.

Irland ist überwiegend hügelig, die vielen Steilküsten sind häufig von traumhaften Sandstränden unterbrochen. Insbesondere diese Küsten sind spektakulär. Hinzu kommen zahllose historische Klöster, Kirchen und Burgen, viele davon sehenswerte Ruinen.

Ireland is predominantly hilly, the many cliffs are often interrupted by gorgeous sandy beaches. These coasts in particular are spectacular. In addition, there are countless historic monasteries, churches and castles, many of which are ruins worth seeing.

Da Irland eine große Insel ist, stehen an seinen Küsten relativ viel Leuchttürme. Die waren für uns wichtige Reiseziele, wie schon in den Anreise-Ländern Belgien, Frankreich und England. Und wieder haben wir bei der Suche nach Leuchttürmen andere sehenswerte Orte gefunden.

As Ireland is a large island, there are relatively many lighthouses on its coasts. They were important travel destinations for us, as they were in the arrival countries Belgium, France and England. And again we found other places worth seeing while searching for lighthouses.

Mitte August war es noch relativ sommerlich im Land, an der Atlantikküste im Westen weniger als an der Ostküste. Im September wurde es am Atlantik zunehmend herbstlich, mit Nebel, Regen und schließlich Sturm.

In mid-August it was still relatively summery in the country, less so on the Atlantic coast in the west than on the east coast. In September, it became increasingly autumnal at the Atlantic, with fog, rain and finally storm.

Englisch ist die hauptsächliche Sprache in Irland, das war, anders als in Ländern, deren Sprache wir nicht beherrschen, für uns im täglichen Leben vorteilhaft. Die Menschen, denen wir begegnet sind, waren freundlich, zuvorkommend und sehr hilfsbereit. Wir sind in einer angenehmen Atmosphäre gereist, haben uns willkommen und sicher gefühlt.

English is the main language in Ireland, which was beneficial for us in our daily lives, unlike in countries where we do not speak the language. The people we met were friendly, courteous and very helpful. We travelled in a pleasant atmosphere, felt welcome and safe.

Das Straßennetz in Irland ist recht gut, die Straßen sind überwiegend asphaltiert. Dennoch war das Fahren meistens anstrengend: Sogar Schnellstraßen sind nicht selten von Kreisverkehren unterbrochen. Niederrangige Straßen sind praktisch alle eng und sehr kurvig, häufig von hohen Hecken, Mauern oder Felsen gesäumt, direkt an der Fahrbahn. Somit ist dort vorausschauendes Fahren unmöglich. Mit einem für Rechtsverkehr gebauten Fahrzeug ist das im Linksverkehr besonders unangenehm.

The road network in Ireland is quite good, the roads are mostly asphalted. Nevertheless, driving was mostly exhausting: even dual carriageways are not infrequently interrupted by roundabouts. Low-ranking roads are practically all narrow and very curvy, often lined with high hedges, walls or rocks, right next to the roadway. Thus, driving with foresight is impossible there. With a vehicle built for right-hand traffic, this is particularly unpleasant in left-hand traffic.

Hinzu kommt, dass lediglich ein paar Schnellstraßen-Strecken wirklich so geebnet sind, dass das Fahrzeug auf dem Fahrbahnbelag ruhig dahin fährt. Praktisch alle anderen Fahrbahnen sind mehr oder weniger uneben. Die Reifen haben dadurch oft verringerte Bodenhaftung, das Fahrzeug wird ständig gerüttelt und die Lenkung erfordert ununterbrochenen Kraftaufwand des Fahrers.

In addition, only a few stretches of motorway are really levelled so that the vehicle can drive smoothly on the road surface. Practically all other roads are more or less uneven. As a result, the tyres often have reduced grip, the vehicle is constantly jolted and the steering requires continuous effort from the driver.

Die irischen Verkehrsteilnehmer, besonders Autofahrer, haben wir als außerordentlich zurückhaltend und hilfsbereit erlebt, mit ein paar extremen Ausnahmen.

Irland ist ein ordentliches, aufgeräumtes Land. Nach den Erlebnissen mit extremer Vermüllung von Landschaften in Südamerika war es eine Wohltat, in wirklicher Zivilisation zu reisen. Auch klimatisch war diese Reise ein willkommenes Kontrastprogramm zu Hitze und Staub.

Ireland is a neat, tidy country. After the experiences with extreme littering of landscapes in South America, it was a relief to travel in real civilisation. Climatically, too, this trip was a welcome contrast to the heat and dust.

Im Sommer ist Irland nicht nur grün sondern bunt. Das Grün überwiegt, hinzu kommen lila Heide, gelber Stechginster, rote Fuchsien allüberall sowie eine große Vielfalt und Menge an Hortensien. Brombeersträucher säumen praktisch alle Wege. Davon haben wir oft genascht.

In summer, Ireland is not only green but colourful. Green predominates, with purple heather, yellow gorse, red fuchsias everywhere and a great variety and quantity of hydrangeas. Blackberry bushes line practically all the paths. We often snacked on them.

Irland ist offenkundig ein beliebtes Land für Wohnmobilreisen, wir haben praktisch überall Womos gesehen. Und wir haben erlebt, dass das Land dafür gut geeignet ist. Offizielle Wohnmobil-Stellplätze haben wir nur wenige genutzt, Campingplätze gar nicht. Oft haben wir an spektakulären Orten übernachtet. Übernachtungsplätze und Wasserhähne haben wir im Wohnmobil-Tourguide Irland, in den internationalen Stellplatz-Portalen Campercontact und park4night gefunden oder selbst entdeckt.

Ireland is obviously a popular country for motorhome trips, we have seen camper vans practically everywhere. And we have experienced that the country is well suited for this. We only used a few official motorhome sites, and no campsites at all. We often spent the night in spectacular places. We found overnight pitches and water taps in the motorhome tour guide Ireland, in the international pitch portals Campercontact and park4night or discovered them ourselves.

Wie in anderen EU-Ländern waren die Supermärkte der uns vertrauten Ketten Lidl und Aldi, aber auch das britische Tesco, erste Wahl für die Lebensmittel-Versorgung. Dort haben wir uns auch mit einer ordentlichen Auswahl Zitrusfrucht-Marmeladen eingedeckt, Orangen und Dreifrucht Marmelades, die in Deutschland selten zu finden sind und schon gar nicht in dieser Vielfalt. Da die Grenze zwischen der Republik Irland und Nordirland offen ist, sind Sortiment und Preise der Supermärkte nur in Nuancen unterschiedlich.

As in other EU countries, the supermarkets of the familiar Lidl and Aldi chains, but also the British Tesco, were our first choice for food supplies. There we also stocked up on a decent selection of citrus fruit marmelades, orange and triple fruit marmelades, which are rarely found in Germany and certainly not in this variety. Since the border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland is open, the range and prices of the supermarkets are only different in nuances.

Die Netzabdeckung von schnellem Mobilem Internet ist in Irland sehr gut, in Stadt und Land. Eine SIM-Karte haben wir nicht gekauft, denn im EU-Land Irland, aber auch in Nordirland, aufgrund einer Übergangsregelung selbst in England und Wales, konnten wir unsere deutschen SIM-Karten (im Smartphone und im Mifi) zu denselben Konditionen nutzen wie zuhause.

The network coverage of fast mobile internet is very good in Ireland, in town and country. We did not buy a SIM card, because in the EU country Ireland, but also in Northern Ireland, due to a transitional arrangement even in England and Wales, we could use our German SIM cards (in the smartphone and in the Mifi) at the same conditions as at home.
