Mit unserem Womo durch Island
Was war das für ein Vierteljahr, was für eine Reise! Von Mitte Mai bis Mitte August waren wir unterwegs: Mit unserem Wohnmobil in den Norden Dänemarks, von dort mit der Fähre über die Färöer nach Island. 11 Wochen haben wir Island bereist, zwischendurch waren wir (ohne Womo) eine Woche in Grönland. Und auf der Rückreise haben wir noch drei Tage die Färöer besucht.
With our camper through Iceland
What a quarter was that, what a journey! From mid-May to mid-August we were on the way: With our motorhome to the north of Denmark, then with the ferry via the Faroes to Iceland. 11 weeks we have traveled Iceland, in between (without camper) we were a week in Greenland. And on the way back we have visited the Faroe Islands for three days.
Unsere Planungen sind mehr als aufgegangen, wir haben den für uns richtigen Zeitraum gewählt. So konnten wir die Natur in ihrer Entfaltung erleben. Im Frühling haben wir sehr viele Vögel beobachtet, Anfang August waren von einigen Arten nur noch einzelne zu sehen. Und es war der Zeitraum mit dem meisten Licht, praktisch Tag und Nacht, und somit auch mit dem meisten Sonnenschein.
Our plans have more than worked out, we have chosen the period right for us. Thus we were able to experience nature in its unfolding. In the spring, we have observed very many birds, early August of some species only individuals were seen. And it was the period with the most light, practically day and night, and thus also with the most sunshine.
Unsere Vorbereitungen haben sich sehr bewährt. Und wir hatten ganz besonderes Glück mit dem Wetter. Was als „Island-Werbewoche“ begann, hat mit kleinen Abstrichen drei Monate gehalten. Alle Isländer, mit denen wir darüber sprachen, haben bestätigt, dass dies der schönste Frühling seit langem war und einer der besten Sommer. Voriges Jahr war das Wetter schlecht.
Our preparations have proved very successful. And we had very much luck with the weather. What began as „Iceland Promotion Week„, with small drawbacks has held for three months. All Icelanders, we talked with about it, have confirmed that this had long been the most beautiful spring and one of the best summer. Last year the weather was bad.
Das Glück mit dem Wetter hat großen Anteil daran, dass wir mehr erlebt und gesehen haben, als erhofft. Unsere 128 Blogbeiträge von dieser Wohnmobilreise (plus 17 über Grönland) dokumentieren das eindrucksvoll. Geholfen hat sicher auch, dass wir Island nicht zum ersten Mal bereist haben, dass wir eine eigene Vorstellung von dem Land und seinen Regionen hatten. So haben unsere 117 Beiträge aus Island mit vielen brillanten Fotos und Informationen schon fast den Charakter eines Kompendiums. Wir sind überzeugt, dass jeder Island-Interessierte hier etwas Nennenswertes findet.
The luck with the weather has a major role in ensuring that we have experienced and seen more than expected. Our 128 blog posts from this motorhome travel (plus 17 on Greenland) impressively document that. Helped has certainly that we haven’t traveld Iceland for the first time, that we had our own impression of the country and its regions. So our 117 posts from Iceland with many brilliant photos and information have almost the character of a compendium. We are convinced that everyone interested in Iceland will find something worth mentioning here.
Unser Wohnmobil hat Allrad-Antrieb und Getriebeuntersetzung. Das hat uns ermöglicht, Routen insbesondere im Hochland, zu befahren und dort Ziele zu erreichen, die sonst unerreichbar gewesen gewesen wären. Das waren einige der attraktivsten Routen und Orte der ganzen Reise. Und uns sind einige Situationen bewusst, in denen wir hätten umkehren müssen, ohne diese zweistufige Ausrüstung sowie die extra für Island beschafften ‚Mud Terrain‘ Reifen. Tatsächlich gab es einzelne Situationen, in denen sie wesentlich zur Vermeidung eines Unfalls waren.
Our mobile home has all-wheel drive and gear reduction. This has enabled us navigating routes especially in the highlands, and reaching goals that would otherwise have been inaccessible. Those were some of the most attractive routes and places of the entire trip. And we are aware of some situations, in which we‘d have to turn back, without this two-stage equipment and the ‘Mud Terrain’ tires, procured specially for Iceland. Indeed, there were some situations in which they were essential for avoiding an accident.
Dennoch sind mindestens 80% der von uns befahrenen Routen auch mit Fahrzeugen ohne Allrad-Antrieb zu befahren (auch Wohnmobile) und sehr viele attraktive Ziele erreichbar.

Die Fahrt nach Kverkfjöll war überflüssig. Die Attraktion, für die es berühmt war, gibt es nicht mehr, und die Piste dort hin ist sehr anstrengend. Die Landschaft, durch die wir gefahren sind, war spektakulär, und daher war es nicht vergebens. Die Sprengisandur würden wir nicht wieder fahren. Wir finden sie nicht annähernd so attraktiv, wie die anderen Hochland-Routen, auf denen wir unterwegs waren. Ansonsten ist sie vor Allem lang und anstrengend. Das Beste an der Sprengisandur sind der Fagrifoss am südlichen Abschnitt und der Aldeyarfoss am nördlichen Ende. Offensichtlich unterbewertet sind die Ostfjorde. Ihre große Entfernung von Reykjavík und Keflavík hält vermutlich viele Reisende davon ab, sie zu bereisen.
Nevertheless, at least 80% of the routes we drove are suitable for vehicles without all-wheel drive (also campers) and many attractive destinations reachable.

Driving to Kverkfjöll was superfluous. The attraction, for which it was famous, is not there anymore, and the track going there is very strenuous. The landscape we passed was spectacular, and therefore it was not in vain. The Sprengisandur we would not drive again. We find it not nearly as attractive as the other Highland routes we have traveled. Apart from that, it is above all long and demanding. The best thing about the Sprengisandur are the Fagrifoss at the southern part and the Aldeyarfoss at the north end. Obviously undervalued are the East Fjords. Their great distance from Reykjavík and Keflavík probably keeps many travelers from getting to tour them.
Die Färöer sind ein interessantes Reiseland für Menschen, die skandinavische Abgeschiedenheit mögen. Die Landschaft ist ungewöhnlich und wunderbar grün. Die Infrastruktur ist gut bis sehr gut. Die sehr freundlichen Menschen leben im Bewusstsein, dass ihr Land sehr friedlich ist. Beworben wird es als größter Freizeitpark der Welt, angeblich ohne Kriminalität.
The Faroes are an interesting travel destination for people who like Scandinavian seclusion. The landscape is unusual and wonderfully green. The infrastructure is good to very good. The very friendly people are aware that their country is very peaceful. It is advertised as the largest amusement park in the world, allegedly without crime.
Wieder mal haben wir einige interessante, sogar spektakuläre Orte zufällig gefunden. Im Wesentlichen haben wir aber außer unserer Erfahrung in Island dem Reiseführer „Island“ aus dem Michael Müller Verlag vertraut. Den schätzen wir sehr wegen seiner Fülle an Informationen. Sehr gute Informationen, nicht nur zum Fotografieren, haben wir zwei E-Book Fotoführern für Island entnommen:
- Nature Photo Guide „Forever Light: The Landscape Photographer’s Guide to Iceland“ von zwei amerikanischen Fotografen,
- „Photo Guide to Iceland“ von zwei isländischen Fotografen.
Beide Führer sind englischsprachig, mit Fotos und hilfreichen Informationen über die beschriebenen Locations sowie weiteren Infos über Reisen in Island. Der erste (19,95 US$) ist ganz ordentlich, den zweiten (kostenlos) finden wir besser.
Once again, we found some interesting, even spectacular places by chance. Essentially, however, other than our experience in Iceland we have trusted in the Tourist Guide „Island“ from the Michael Müller Verlag. We appreciate it because of its wealth of information. Very good informations, not only for photographing, we have taken from two eBook Photo Guides for Iceland:
- Nature Photo Guide „Forever Light: The Landscape Photographer’s Guide to Iceland“ by two american photographers,
- „Photo Guide to Iceland“ by two Icelandic photographers.
Both guides are in English, with photos and helpful information about the described locations and further information about traveling in Iceland. The first ($ 19.95) is pretty good, the second (free) we find better.
Zwei Karten haben sich für uns in Island bewährt:
- „Ísland Vegaatlas“ von Idnu Publishing, Ringbindung, viersprachig inkl. deutsch,
- „Map of Iceland“ von International Photographer (Paris), englisch.
Der Straßenatlas ist sehr detailreich und war für uns ganz wesentlich zur Orientierung. Die zweite Karte bietet eine gute Übersicht über das Land und fotografisch (und touristisch) interessante Orte und Gegenden.
Für die Färöer hatten wir den von Visit Faroe Islands kostenlos sowohl im Internet als PDF verbreiteten als auch auf der MF Norönna ausgelegten offiziellen Reiseführer. Den gibt es in verschiedenen Sprachen, u.A. in deutsch. Dazu hatten wir die „Autokarte Färöer“ von Solberg.
Two maps have proved for us in Iceland:
- „Ísland Vegaatlas“ from Idnu Publishing, ring binding, multilingual incl. English,
- „Map of Iceland“ by International Photographer (Paris), Englisch.
The road atlas is very rich in detail and was very important for us for guidance. The second map provides a good overview of the country plus photographically (and touristy) interesting places and areas.
For the Faroe Islands we had the free official guide by Visit Faroe Islands spread on the Internet as PDF and on the MF Norönna. It exists in various languages, et al in English. In addition we had the „Road map Faroe Islands“ from Solberg.
